Disney MagicBand+ wearable tech marks the next generation of the MagicBand.

In a barrage of breaking news announcements (Galactic Starcruiser opening date?! Hey Disney technology?! Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opening date?!), Disney also let it slip that it would be releasing the next generation of its MagicBand technology in 2022 as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration. This definitely caught me off-guard this morning because, quite frankly, we all thought the Magic Band was being phased out.

But with Disney+ and Genie+, we should have known that Disney’s move to be forward-thinking is to slap a big old plus sign onto its properties (and add some dollar signs to boot). But despite those extra dollar signs, the Disney MagicBand+ actually seems really flippin’ cool.

It’ll have been almost a decade since the first MagicBand was introduced when the new Disney MagicBand+ hits the market. Already, the MagicBand makes a resort stay and park visit more convenient, with hands-free room and park entry, simple PhotoPass scanning, ride interaction, and easy payment options on property.

The new Disney MagicBand+ will retain all those features, but there’s so much more magic that Mickey’s embedding in your wrist.

Disney MagicBand+ Features

In addition to the traditional MagicBand features, you can expect your MagicBand+ to use haptic vibrations and color-changing lights at key moments. Think of it as a way of your wearable to say, “Yo, stop taking Instagram photos of your Peter Pan Float and pay attention; there’s something important going on!”

A technology that makes us more present? How novel.

Some of the MagicBand+ features include:

  • Unique lighting displays timed with nighttime spectaculars, including Disney Enchantment and Harmonious
  • A new way to interact with the Fab 50 character statues across all four parks
  • A bounty-hunting adventure at Galaxy’s Edge

The wearable will even include gesture recognition.

How Much Does the MagicBand+ Cost?

Disney has not yet announced a price for the new MagicBand+, but I can say with certainty it will cost more than traditional MagicBands. And with themed MagicBands retailing for as much as $29.99, I can only imagine that the price of a MagicBand+ may climb up to $40 or $50.

A bright spot: Walt Disney World Resort guests and Annual Passholders will be able to get a discounted, prearrival price on the MagicBand+.

Should I Get a MagicBand+?

This completely depends on how you want to experience Disney World. If using My Disney Experience and Play Disney Parks already take you away from the magic and nostalgia, an interactive MagicBand+ is not for you.

But if you’ve got to have all the latest innovations from Imagineers (and want to feel even closer to the fireworks and magic), consider purchasing a MagicBand+.

Not sure if you’re going? You can just get more information about a potential Disney vacation.
