What is the NBA Experience? Let’s Find Out!

by | Aug 14, 2019 | WDW Blog

The NBA Experience is the newest addition to Disney Springs, located on the West Side across from House of Blues and next to Cirque du Soleil. This location was formerly the home of Disney Quest, which closed in 2017 to make way for this new experience.

Disney hasn’t been shy with details about this new experience, but many guests are still wondering what to expect when they visit. If you’re curious about what the NBA Experience is all about, you might want to keep reading…

A Star-Studded Grand Opening Ceremony

On August 12, Disney invited fans and media from across the country to attend a special grand opening ceremony, which featured appearances by Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Basketball Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Grant Hill, NBA legend Dwyane Wade, Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez, Utah Jazz point guard Mike Conley, Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo, Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon, Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem, and WNBA legend Swin Cash. But that’s not all…

Our favorite couple also made an appearance at the ceremony!

The NBA Experience

After the ceremony, we were invited inside to explore the facility and try out some of the new activities. Before we get into that, let’s get the basic information out of the way first…

One-day tickets for the NBA Experience are $34 for adults and $29 for children 9 & under (plus tax). Your ticket includes access to all of the activities inside. Plus, you can leave and come back at any time throughout the day using the same ticket.

Everyone in your party must purchase a ticket, even if you don’t all plan on participating in the physical activities. There is a good variety of things to do so there are plenty of other activities for you to enjoy.

Adults are required to sign a waiver upon entering the venue. Guests under 14 must be accompanied by a guest 14 or older. A parent or guardian must be present to sign a waiver for any guest younger than 18.

Here’s a look at the thirteen activities you can experience at the NBA Experience.

  • DUNK!: Demonstrate your dunking skills and walk away with a really cool over-the-rim action photo. You can adjust the height of the hoop to make sure you get the perfect dunk.

  • SHOOT!: Ever dreamed of making the game-winning basket? Test your shooting skills around the court while a virtual crowd cheers you on.
  • DRIBBLE: Get a private lesson from a virtual coach to take your basketball-handling skills to the next level. This challenge is designed for a wide range of skill levels from novice to expert.
  • SLINGSHOT: This is an activity for the whole family! Using a large slingshot, try to shoot the ball through hoops at varying heights.

  • ARCADE AREA: Test your hand-eye coordination with a variety of activities including classic basketball arcade games, a virtual arena of immersive video games, and Pop-A-Shot arcade games for the little ones.
  • DRAFT COMBINE: Put your skills to the test in a series of Combine drills. You’ll get real time feedback about your wingspan, vertical leap, and shooting performance to see how you compare to a pro.
  • TRIVIA: Think you know the NBA? Test your knowledge of the NBA—past and present—in a competitive game of trivia.
  • CHAMPIONS: Learn all about the rich history of the NBA and WNBA in the Hall of Champions. Interactive screens put the history of these organizations right at your fingertips.
  • TROPHY PHOTO-OP: Get immersed in the feeling of victory with this fun trophy photo-op in the Hall of Champions.
  • REPLAY: Test your split-second decision-making to see if you have what it takes to be a game official. Review real gameplay and rack up points with each correct call.
  • SHORT FILMS: The NBA Experience is home to two custom-made theaters, featuring a collection of short films that will draw you into the world of the fan and the player.
  • DRAFT PHOTO-OP: Experience the biggest moment of a player’s life and get your photo taken with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Well, maybe not the REAL Adam Silver… but an eerily life-like wax figure of him.
  • PLAYERS: Step inside the locker room where you can explore team rosters, records, and highlights on interactive screens.

Exit Through the Gift Shop

If you’re looking for a souvenir or official NBA gear, stop by The NBA Store before you exit. You’ll find jerseys and gear from a variety of teams and players, plus some cute NBA/Disney collaborative merchandise.

The Final Score

I must admit, my interest in basketball is very minimal. I used to play in elementary and middle school, but that is the extent of my knowledge and skill. I wouldn’t say I’m the target demographic for this type of experience, so I went in with zero expectations. My favorite activity—probably because it requires no skill or NBA knowledge—is Slingshot. It’s definitely something that can be enjoyed by everyone in the whole family.

So, would I come back again? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean you should skip this experience. I think the technology being used here is extremely cool and something that shouldn’t be overlooked. Plus, it was really fun to watch others play the games.

Overall, I think the NBA Experience would be great for:

  1. NBA fans of all ages, especially children and teens.
  2. Anyone who loves to play or watch basketball.
  3. Children who love to run around and play any game that’s available to them.
  4. Families looking for something unique to do during their trip to Walt Disney World.

If your family falls into any of those categories, I think you should consider checking it out!
