What Happened to Disney Movie Club?

We’re sharing everything you need to know about Disney Movie Club, a subscription-style service that allows Disney fans to catch their favorite films right at home with ease.

For over two decades, Disney fans have had access to exclusive new movie releases, special discounted pricing, and some other awesome perks through Disney Movie Club. If you’re someone who can never get enough Disney movies and series to watch, Disney Movie Club delivered, offering a whole library of options in the form of DVDs and Blu-rays delivered right to your door.

What happened to Disney Movie Club? We’re taking a look back at the service, how it’s changed, and where you can head in the future for your Disney movie fix.

What is Disney Movie Club?

Disney Movie Club launched in 2001 as a service that allowed fans to get their hands on physical copies of their favorite Disney movies with ease. The site offered a subscription-style service, which offered exclusive Disney films on physical home video (like Blu-ray and DVD formats). Every month, subscribers would be sent the latest Disney home video release.

There were some great perks available through Disney Movie Club. Subscribers could purchase exclusive titles on Blu-ray and DVD, and they could also take advantage of deep discounts on some Disney movies. Plus, with each month’s home video release, extras were typically included –– meaning subscribers could get their hands on cool exclusives like lithographs or collectible pins.

The exclusive movie releases offered were also particularly unique, especially for Disney fans who love classic, forgotten, or hard-to-find films. The club would release some of these lesser-known or less popular movies on physical media, and the only way to get your hands on them was to be a Disney Movie Club member. Beloved, cult classic films like A Goofy Movie, Blackbeard’s Ghost, The Boatniks, and even The Black Cauldron were all exclusive releases through the club.

Disney Movie Club is Shutting Down in 2024

On February 20, 2024, Disney announced that Disney Movie Club would shut down in the coming months. The service will give customers until May 20, 2024 to place their final orders, and the club will officially close its doors for good on July 20, 2024.

According to Disney’s official statement, “consumer behavior and viewing preferences continu[ing] to evolve” led to the decisions to close the club.

While physical copies of movies are still staples in many households, plenty of Disney fans prefer the on-demand nature of streaming –– and it’s an easier way to turn on your favorite films and watch them without having to rely on having a DVD or Blu-Ray version on hand. In recent years, however, Disney Movie Club saw its library of offerings slimmed down due to decreasing demand. The club saw cuts due to financial losses in 2019 and 2020, so its closure is not a significant surprise.

With an ever-growing library of movies available right on Disney+, it’s natural to see this Disney-owned streaming service take priority over the more old-school subscription-style club.

Where to Watch Your Favorite Disney Movies Without Disney Movie Club

Wondering how you’ll get your fix of Disney movies without Disney Movie Club shipping a DVD or Blu-ray to your door each month? Well, while this subscription service is winding down, there’s another that’s ready to welcome fans: Disney+.

Disney+ is where you’ll find all of the movies, television shows, and special limited series available to stream on demand. With a subscription to Disney+, you can catch your favorite Disney media any time (and anywhere!). It works across devices and allows you to enjoy everything right at home, just like physical home media does… without needing equipment like a DVD or Blu-ray player. All you’ll need is an internet connection.

Where to Get Disney Movies on Blu-ray or DVD

Unfortunately, while Disney+ will serve the needs of most Disney movie fans, some of the films available to subscribers of Disney Movie Club won’t be available to stream. Currently, you can’t find every single Disney movie or television series on Disney+ –– and many hard-to-find films and series have yet to come to streaming platforms at all. It’s currently unclear if Disney plans to release these titles on Disney+ once Disney Movie Club officially closes its doors come July 2024, or if they might be reissued as physical home media in another manner.

Additionally, if you’re someone who loves being able to get physical copies of Disney movies and television shows in a Blu-ray or DVD format, fear not: Physical home media is not going away entirely. It’s rumored that Sony will be taking over Disney’s physical home media production, meaning Sony will determine which films and series are released. While the process may be changing, this ensures there are still plans for Disney movies to appear on the shelves of retailers (and you’ll likely be able to easily find them in places like Amazon, Target, and Walmart).

So, while you may not find lesser-known or more rare Disney movies and series on Disney+ –– and physical home media won’t be possible if you opt for streaming only –– the odds that the movies you know and love will appear on the streaming platform are high. As an added perk, Disney+ is home to remastered and high-quality versions of these films and shows, giving you the latest versions that are made for watching in modern media formats (and on the go!).
