Where to Wait Out the Rain at Magic Kingdom

If a storm rolls in or the heat becomes overwhelming, head for indoor attractions like:

• “it’s a small world”
• Mickey’s PhilharMagic
• Hall of Presidents
• Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress

These attractions offer air conditioning and longer ride times—perfect for waiting out a passing storm.

Shops are another great option. The Emporium on Main Street, U.S.A., is especially useful thanks to its large size and connected layout. If you’re lucky, rainy weather might even bring out the Rainy Day Cavalcade, a fun and rare character experience.

Where to Buy Ponchos at Magic Kingdom

When rain approaches, you’ll see Ponchos make their appearance. While we suggest you bring your own disposable ponchos with you, that you can purchase from Amazon, if you forget them back at the room Disney has them for sale. You’ll find them for sale around Magic Kingdom Park at most stores, including the Emporium on Main Street U.S.A.

Outdoor attractions are the most impacted during storms, especially with lightning. These may temporarily close:

EPCOT Ride Closures in Bad Weather

Unlike other parks, EPCOT has very few weather-related closures since most rides are indoors. This makes it one of the most reliable parks on rainy days. However, Test Track is one that will close with lightning due to its outdoor portion.

An Overview of Hurricane Season at Disney

As we mentioned, hurricane season usually runs from June to November. But, the tropics are typically most active in September and October. It’s important to keep an eye out on the weather forecast if you are planning to visit during this time of year. 

Tips on How to Prepare 

The most important thing we suggest if you are visiting Disney during hurricane season is to stay updated. Keep an eye on the weather forecast for the area as well as the MyDisney Experience App to see any updates that can impact your vacation. 

If you are in Disney and there is a storm coming, we suggest you either get an Uber to the closest grocery store to get some items or even call Instacart. The resort will be packed with things you need but if you like specific snacks or drinks, keep them in your room. 

Disney’s Hurricane Policy 

If a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area or your own residences area within 7 days of your scheduled arrival, Disney allows you to reschedule or cancel your hotel or reservation without any penalty. If you booked via a third party, you’ll need to see what the cancellation policy is for that company. Another option is to reschedule your trip if there is a hurricane warning. 

What Happens During a Hurricane at Disney?

If Disney is faced with a hurricane and you are in one of their hotels, you’ll be in safe hands. Most hotels will stay open for the duration of the storm and will be open for both guests and locals who are evacuating. The only hotels not open are the Treehouse Villas, the Cabins at Copper Creek, Ft. Wilderness Resort and Campgrounds, and sometimes the Bungalows at the Polynesian. 

You’ll still have access to select dining in the resort, and there will typically be activities at your resort like free movies, character visits, free play at the arcades, and more.
