Without moms, nobody would be here today, and that’s just as true for all of your favorite Disney characters. Here are our picks for the top Disney moms!

Whether living or deceased, mothers have a deep impact in the lives of Disney heroes and heroines.

Unfortunately, many of them have kicked the bucket by the time the movie starts.

When it comes to mothers who are still alive, we have many to see in action and appreciate. Each of these animated mothers — human or not — can teach us something about how to be a good parent. They each exhibit qualities that we all can look up to.

In no particular order, these are the best (living) Disney mothers.

MRS. POTTS (Beauty and the Beast)

It’s hard enough to raise a child amid life’s normal hitches, so imagine how difficult it’d be to do so after you’ve been supernaturally cursed.

Even faced with the trauma of being transformed into limbless kitchenware, Mrs. Potts exhibits a patient, nurturing temperament toward her son. She clearly doesn’t let her undeserved curse inhibit her parenting, nor the fact that she’s a single parent.

QUEEN ELINOR (Brave)

Admittedly not mother of the year, Queen Elinor has loving intentions in the way she attempts to guide her daughter’s life.

However, her stubborn traditionalism and resistance to listening to other perspectives causes her to clash with equally strong-willed Merida.

What earns Queen Elinor a place on this list is her ability to examine her convictions and change her ways. Her growth in compassion and grace requires humility and — frankly — bravery.

She reminds us that even if you love your child, that doesn’t mean you have all the right answers.

CHICHA (The Emperor’s New Groove)

Unlike other mothers on this list, Chicha faces relatively benign personal challenges in her life. She’s not turned into a bear or a teapot, nor is her husband killed or child kidnapped. She’s just an average mother who cooks, cleans, and raises two boisterous children (with a third on the way).

But from the moment we first are introduced to Chicha, we see her spunk, caring nature, and dedication to her family. She’s the emotional anchor of the household and has genuine romantic love for her husband. She even shows grace toward Cuzco when she knows he intends to destroy their home.

HELEN PARR (The Incredibles)

What makes Mr. Incredible’s wife a great mother isn’t her superhuman abilities. It’s her willingness to set aside a life of crime-fighting (whether through government compulsion or not) to wholeheartedly commit to raising three super-powered children.

Just as Mr. Incredible struggles with giving up on his dreams for a safe, comfortable domestic life, so too does his wife. Yet she doesn’t let her glory days overshadow her family’s well-being. She works tirelessly to maintain peace in her warring household while dealing with her husband’s ego.

Helen strives to maintain her family’s cover to keep them safe — and when their lives are at risk, she’s at the front lines protecting them.

SARAH HAWKINS (Treasure Planet)

Although we don’t see very much of Jim Hawkins’ mother throughout the movie, her dedication to raising Jim — who’s, honestly, a handful — and running the family business make her a sterling mother.

As a working parent keeping The Benbow Inn running without her husband, Sarah already has her hands full.

On top of that, she has to keep Jim in check when he gets in trouble with the law. And when the Inn is destroyed, she allows Jim to go on a galaxy-crossing adventure for treasure. That takes a lot of courage and trust.

Her stern yet loving approach to childrearing is admirable, as is her concern for her son’s future.

MRS. JUMBO (Dumbo)

No Disney character embodies pure maternal instinct as completely as Mrs. Jumbo. She’s the O.G.– Profoundly nurturing of her big-eared son, she doesn’t care what her child looks like, even when others tease him.

She stands up for him in the face of intolerance, sacrificing her own social standing and well-being without a second thought.

When her son is being bullied, she reacts with pure defensiveness even though it means being separated from him. It might not be the wisest reaction, but it definitely shows that she has a big heart — and not just because she’s a big animal.

KALA (Tarzan)

After losing her baby, Kala opens her heart to a child of a different species. In a daring act of compassion, she immediately commits to being his adoptive mother after saving his life.

Without any hesitancy, Kala brings home baby Tarzan to join her family, even though the tribe is skeptical — particularly her mate and alpha male Kerchak, who fears outsiders. Plus, she sings one of the best “mom songs” in the whole Disney cannon (second only to Mrs. Jumbo’s “Baby Mine”).

LAUREL LIGHTFOOT (Onward)

When you think of a Disney mother who will go to any lengths for her children, Laurel Lightfoot should come to mind.

Driven by an unrelenting pursuit of her children’s well-being, she leaves her comfortable domestic life and faces brutal dangers like an aggressive gang of pixies and a massive concrete dragon. Even when her safety is at risk, she’s never deterred. It’s all about her sons.

PERDITA (101 Dalmatians)

Imagine being a mother of 15 adorable children only to have your young ones kidnapped by villains to be skinned. And then, once you rescue your own children, you’ve adopted so many other kids that you’re a mother of 101. What an undertaking!

In many ways, Perdita the protagonist of the story, and the journey she goes on is one that expands her understanding of parenthood beyond just the well-being of the children she birthed.
