Tokyo Disney Merch We Wish Was Available in the U.S. Parks

by | Dec 7, 2023 | International Parks, Tokyo Disney Resort, Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea

Check out the Tokyo Disney merch we absolutely loved and wished we could buy right here in the U.S. at Disneyland or Walt Disney World!

It’s no secret that each Disney theme park around the world has its own exclusive merch. Even Disney Cruise Line ships offer their very own themed products! But if you’re a Disney fan who’s solely visited the U.S. theme parks, you might not realize that some of the best, most exciting merch actually exists at the international parks – specifically, Tokyo Disney Resort.

I discovered some incredible merch at Tokyo Disney, from adorable plushies (and plush accessories) to exciting electronic accessories, all of which are only available outside the U.S. Below, I’m sharing my favorite Tokyo Disney merch that I wished was available elsewhere – if you’re headed to Tokyo any time soon, keep an eye out for these must-haves!

Plush Bags

When you visit Tokyo Disney Resort, the first merch that’ll likely catch your eye are the many plush bags you’ll see guests wearing. These plush bags, which can be worn as either shoulder bags or necklace bags, are hugely popular! Everyone at Tokyo Disney has a plush bag, and they’re available at all of the merch stalls, all of the vendors, and all of the shops resort-wide.

Typically, the plush bags feature a character head or face in plush form, with a little zipper at the top that opens to a bag compartment and a little slot at the back of the bag for stashing theme park tickets (if you’re using a physical park ticket – I used this slot for my monorail ticket!). They’re very lightweight, and the strap allows for versatility.

Plush bags are great for showing your character affinity, as you can choose your favorite Disney faces. I got a Mickey Mouse plush bag, but I also spotted Baymax, Oswald, Donald Duck, and Minnie Mouse bags. Tokyo Disney even changes the characters periodically, so you never know who you’re going to find on one next! Sometimes, you’ll even find food-themed plush bags – I’ve seen a Mickey hamburger one in the past.

Wearable Plushies

Plush merch is huge at Tokyo Disney! So, my second-favorite item is another plush-centric piece: wearable plushies.

Wearable plushies are a big trend in Japan. People love to wear their character plushies on them physically, either on a lanyard or on their phone straps (phone straps are also popular – we’ll get to that later!). They’re essentially little keychains, but in plush form. In addition to wearing them physically, these can be hung all over bags, too.

I saw people with 20 or more of these cute little plushies hanging from their backpacks or clipped onto their clothing. Characters were hanging from people’s shirt collars, their pockets, their shoulders, even their headgear. People just put characters all over!

In addition to keychain-type wearable plushies that you can clip onto yourself, Tokyo Disney Resort also offers plushies with actual pins. These are meant to be pinned onto your clothing, and they’re so cute!

Headwear and Character Headbands

Headwear is another popular category of merch at Tokyo Disney, and it’s one I wish they would bring to the U.S. Disney parks. At Disney World and Disneyland we have Mickey ears and Minnie ears, and occasionally we have hats, but we don’t do headwear like they do in Japan.

At Tokyo Disney Resort, you’ll find the craziest character headbands! Instead of just Mickey ears, you’ll see actual characters on headbands. When you put one of these headbands on, the character is sitting on your head. It’s so adorable! Tokyo Disney even has giant plush character headbands. They’re also like helmets made out of plush; they’re huge. Think of it like you’re wearing a big pillow on your head – people wear these all over the place.

I spotted character headbands featuring Ham and the Aliens from Toy Story, two of the most popular picks across Tokyo Disney. There was also a giant Baymax (Big Hero 6) headband, which was hysterical!

Though these giant character headbands are so funny to see on people, a lot of people wear them – and they’re so comfortable! I would have needed to take one with me if I was traveling on a plane so I could lay my head down and be inside a giant pillow.

Character Sunglasses

For adults, it’s so hard to find cute Disney sunglasses that actually fit an adult-sized head. Many of the ones you’ll find at Disney World or Disneyland are smaller because they’re specifically designed for kids. However, that’s not the case at Tokyo Disney.

At Tokyo Disney Resort, most of the merch is for adults. That means when it comes to sunglasses, you’ll find numerous options. You’ll find Mickey sunglasses, which feature two iconic Mickey ears on top of each lens, and different character sunglasses. For example, I saw a Baymax pair – each lens was a Baymax head – and a Minnie and Mickey pair, which featured one lens styled after Minnie Mouse and one styled after Sorcerer Mickey.

Electronics Accessories

In Japan, electronics accessories are big. Everybody wears their phone on a lanyard (I’ve been wearing my phone on a lanyard for years because I’ve lost my phone one too many times!), and so Japan’s Disney Stores and Tokyo Disney sell lanyards for your phone. These are really convenient, and you can even hang your little plush character keychains off your phone lanyard and accessorize it.

In addition to phone lanyards, Tokyo Disney also sells lots of cute phone cases and charging cables with a character at the end. It looks like you’re plugging a little character into your phone – I saw Donald, Stitch, Oswald, and more. You’ll find these all over the place here!
