How to Ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT

by | Jun 18, 2024 | EPCOT, Walt Disney World

Want to ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind but aren’t sure what the official park protocol is? We’re breaking down everything you need to know about the ride and its virtual queue.

When Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind first opened back in May 2022, it was an instant hit with EPCOT guests. With sky-high demand and thousands of visitors clamoring for a chance to be among the first to ride the attraction, Disney decided to take a slightly different approach to quell the crowds. Instead of offering a traditional standby line that could stretch hours long, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opened with no standby line and a virtual queue.

Currently, even though demand for EPCOT’s Guardians of the Galaxy themed coaster has calmed down quite a bit, it’s still one of the theme park’s most popular attractions. And getting on the ride does take some finessing, as there is still no standby line offered.

So, how can you ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT? We’re explaining everything you need to know in a step-by-step guide below.

How to Ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

When Guardian of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opened, there was just one way to ride: via virtual queue. It was just like the virtual queues used for other brand-new attractions like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure or Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

So, if you’ve ever used a virtual queue for another Disney World attraction, you’re already familiar with the process for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

Today, however, the ride offers two ways to ride: via virtual queue or Individual Lightning Lane. That means you can try your luck at nabbing a boarding group during virtual queue distribution times or you can opt to purchase an Individual Lightning Lane through Genie (not Genie+!).

Using the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Virtual Queue

To join the virtual queue for Cosmic Rewind, you’ll need to be fast – and know how to get around the My Disney Experience app.

Virtual queues are offered twice per day (with a third offered occasionally). They’re offered at:

  • 7:00 AM, and you can join the virtual queue from anywhere
  • 1:00 PM, and you must physically be in EPCOT to join the queue
  • 6:00 PM, only on nights EPCOT offers Extended Evening Hours (and only eligible guests can join this queue)

Additionally, it’s important to note that you can only get one boarding group per day. So, if you’re assigned to a boarding group during the 7:00 AM virtual queue, you will not be able to join another when the second round opens at 1:00 PM.

Ready to try your hand at the virtual queue? When 7:00 AM (or 1:00 PM) rolls around, here’s what to do in the My Disney Experience:

  • Tap the hamburger menu in the app to find Virtual Queues in the menu
  • In My Queues, tap “Join Virtual Queue”
  • You’ll either be automatically directed to the Cosmic Rewind virtual queue or be able to choose it from a list
  • Confirm your party (all of the linked tickets or passes who’ll ride with you)
  • Tap “Join Virtual Queue”

If you’re successful, you’ll be automatically redirected to a screen that says “You’re in a Boarding Group!” and confirms your boarding group number, which groups are currently boarding, and your estimated wait time.

Don’t forget to keep an eye on your boarding group throughout the day. Even if it looks like you’ll have hours to go before you’re called over to Cosmic Rewind, that can change! Check the app every so often to see if your boarding time might have moved up – or back – so you can adjust your plans for the day accordingly.

Booking an Individual Lightning Lane for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle – and uncertainty – of trying to get a boarding group via the virtual queue, the easiest way to guarantee you’ll get to ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is to book an Individual Lightning Lane.

Yes, you do have to pay money if you opt for an Individual Lightning Lane. You can expect to spend $15 to $17 (or more) on an Individual Lightning Lane for Guardians.

Remember: Price fluctuates based on demand, so you can see lower prices on less crowded days… and much higher prices on the busiest dates of the year.

However, you don’t need to spring for Genie+ and an Individual Lightning Lane to ride. Individual Lightning Lanes are available through Disney Genie, the free version of the service. You can purchase Individual Lightning Lanes a la carte, meaning you can buy just one during your visit – or more, if you’d like.

Book an Individual Lightning Lane for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is the exact same process as booking any other Lightning Lane. Here’s how it works.

Individual Lightning Lanes can be purchased and booked as soon as EPCOT opens for the day (or, if you’re staying at a Disney World Resort hotel, at 7:00 AM). However, you can set up Disney Genie and get ready before the park opens. Here’s how to do so:

  • Tap into Disney Genie inside the My Disney Experience app
  • Select your theme park (EPCOT) and the date of your visit
  • Select Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind as one of your Top Picks

On the day of your visit, check out your Tip Board for Disney Genie and make sure EPCOT is showing. From there:

  • A panel for Cosmic Rewind should appear, offering an Individual Lightning Lane
  • Tap into the Individual Lighting Lane option for the ride
  • Select the time you’d like to ride (just keep in mind times can book up fast!)
  • Select your party (or who will be riding with you)
  • Complete your purchase and confirm your Individual Lightning Lane time

When your window arrives, you can head over to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and get into the Lightning Lane queue!

Can’t find your Lightning Lane reservation? It’ll be in the My Day section of Genie inside the My Disney Experience app.
