To contend with busy parks and long lines, Disney has announced some temporary Disney Genie+ changes: Space Mountain, Frozen Ever After, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will join the Genie+ lineup, rather than be offered as Individual Lightning Lane selections.

Crowds at Disney World have been at all time highs since pre-pandemic days. Guests are excited about the 50th Anniversary Celebration, and with the continued return of live entertainment and the opening of Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster right around the corner, there are no signs that the crowds will slow down.

In an effort to keep lines shorter, Disney has introduced some temporary Genie+ changes: Three rides that were previously only offered as Individual Lightning Lane selections (meaning you had to pay extra money to jump the line, separate from Genie+), have been added to the Genie+ offerings list:

  • Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom
  • Frozen Ever After at EPCOT
  • Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

These changes go into effect today (Feb. 25, 2022) and will remain in effect until Aug 7., 2022, when kids start returning to school.

Disney Genie+ Changes: How Do They Affect Your Trip?

While navigating Genie+ and these frequent changes can be difficult, rest assured: This is a good thing.

Having these hot-ticket rides added to Genie+ means there is one extra ride to choose from in three out of four parks for guests who buy the Genie+ service for the day. Where before, you might have had 10,000 guests fighting over nine Genie+ attractions at EPCOT, those guests will instead be spread out over 10 attractions, which might make it a little easier to snag your Lightning Lane for Soarin’ or Living with the Land.

I think this will have the greatest effect at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where Slinky Dog Dashthe rope-drop ride of DHS before Rise of the Resistance converted from virtual Boarding Groups to standby queue, is inexplicably not offered as an Individual Lightning Lane selection. (Surely, Slink has to command longer lines than Runaway Railway, which was one of the two Individual Lightning Lane selections before this change.)

Because Rise of the Resistance and Runaway Railway were both offered as Individual Lightning Lane selections, most guests with Genie+ on their DHS day were vying for Slinky Dog Dash, making it almost impossible to secure early in the day. But now with Runaway Railway added to the Genie+ list, some guests will instead opt for that as their top pick in the morning, adding more space for those who want to prioritize Slinky Dog.

This is also great news for those who were upset at the thought of paying extra to ride specific attractions that weren’t included in Genie+. Now, EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios only have one special ride you’ll have to pay more to experience if you don’t want to wait standby:

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom
  • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Animal Kingdom retains both of its Individual Lightning Lane selections: Avatar Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest (which is closed for refurbishment through April).
