Star Wars Mindful Matters and Ashley Eckstein aim to calm minds this summer.

Sometimes it is hard to express strong emotions or know exactly what to do in a time of need. Everyone needs a good dose of mindfulness from time to time. Why not do it in the fashion of a true Jedi?

Lessons from the Jedi

There are five lessons offered in the Mindful Matter series. Here are two of our favorite lessons that focus on big feelings:

The Cave Challenge: learning to confront fear and problems with patience, kindness, love, peace, and hope. When Luke was training to be a Jedi, he had to go into the cave as a test. The cave represented his mind; when luke was confronted with his fears in the cave, he fought back with anger and aggression rather than with patience.

Because of this, he failed the Jedi test. This lesson tells us how the cave represented Luke’s mind. Everyone has their own cave; it’s up to us as individuals how exactly we handle these fears.

Droid Friends: This lesson teaches kids that even when they feel lonely, there is always someone they can reach out to in their time of need—whether it be friends, parents, teachers, or siblings. Even Star Wars characters have to reach out to their droid friends sometimes in times of need.

For years Eckstein had kids asking her how to be a Jedi. Back then, Disney Parks offered light saber training activities, but nothing that could help kids learn about the other Jedi tenets that are centered around peace, the force, and facing your fears.

Growing up, she saw her sister’s struggle with anxiety and the taboo nature of talking about mental health. She says, “Talking about feelings of mental health, but even just lessons of mindfulness, there was a stigma around it.”

She realized that most of the Jedi tenets were really just ways to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is such an important part of a healthy life, and to teach kids this early on in life in a fun way matters. She states, “Over time I thought, ‘We should be teaching these lessons,’” she told “Because these lessons are very important. They’re lessons of hope, and they’re, essentially, mindfulness lessons.”
