Today in Disney History, 2012: Snow White’s Scary Adventures Closes

by | May 31, 2024 | Disney History, Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World

We’re looking back at the history and evolution of Snow White’s Scary Adventures at Walt Disney World, including its eventual closure in 2012.

On May 31, 2012, a chapter in Disney history closed with the permanent shuttering of Snow White’s Scary Adventures at Magic Kingdom. The iconic attraction was one of the original opening day rides in 1971 and was beloved for its unique storytelling and history.

Snow White’s Scary Adventures

When it first opened, the ride was titled Snow White’s Adventures. It was a dark ride that brought guests into the story of Snow White. Guests boarded mine cars and went through various scenes from the film, depicting Snow White’s escape from the Evil Queen and rescue by the Prince.

The ride was known for its slightly frightening elements, as well as the lack of the titular character throughout. While the ride was originally intended for the rider to represent Snow White, a 1994 renovation changed that element so that Snow White appeared in more scenes to better clarify that for the rider. This is also when it was renamed as Snow White’s Scary Adventures, to better emphasize the slightly more frightening nature.

Ride Closure

The decision to close the ride was part of a larger plan to expand and enhance Fantasyland. The area where the ride was located was reimagined to include new attractions more closely aligned with contemporary audience expectations. Now, the area is home to Princess Fairytale Hall, a meet and greet lcoation.

Snow White in the Disney Parks Today

While Snow White’s Scary Adventures has been closed for over a decade, the character’s legacy still lives on in the park. In Magic Kingdom, you can ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, a family-friendly coaster with characters and scenes from the film. At Disneyland Park in California, the recently updated and renamed Snow White’s Enchanted Wish still exists as a dark ride taking you through the story.

Additionally, versions of that ride can be found at Disneyland Paris, named Blanche-Neige et les Sept Nains. Plus, one at Tokyo Disneyland is named Snow White’s Adventures. These rides continue to bring the story of Snow White to life, allowing new generations of Disney guests to experience the classic fairytale.
