During a media event celebrating Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ 30th Anniversary, we were given a sneak peek of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge!
On May 1, Disney’s Hollywood Studios celebrated its 30th Anniversary. That’s three decades of moviemaking magic!
A day before the celebration, Disney invited us to a special media event highlighting all things Hollywood Studios. At the event, we checked out some of the 30th Anniversary food and merchandise, attended an exclusive early showing of the new “Wonderful World of Animation” projection show, and—to everyone’s surprise and delight—we were given a sneak peek of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge!
Where my love of Star Wars began…
Although I am not old enough to have experienced the original theatrical release of Star Wars in the 1970’s, I have been a Star Wars fan since I was a child thanks to my dad and my uncle who collectively introduced me to what has become one of the greatest loves of my life. The franchise has had its highs and lows, but I will forever be a Star Wars fan.
(I even played a Leia-inspired character in a Star Wars parody film that our videography club made in high school over ten years ago… but we won’t talk about that.)
I cried tears of joy when Disney announced that a Star Wars-themed land would be coming to Hollywood Studios, and I’ve been impatiently waiting ever since. August 29th can’t come soon enough!
Sneak Peek of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
Out of all the media opportunities I’ve had covering events for WDW Magazine, this was the coolest! We changed into our approved construction site attire and anxiously waited our turn outside the Galaxy’s Edge entrance. We were asked to leave all of our cameras and recording equipment outside, so I will do my best to describe my experience in detail.
Before I even had a chance to prepare myself emotionally, we were greeted by a Cast Member telling us it was our turn. When I say I was shaking from nervous excitement, I mean it—I was shaking like a leaf! I’m even shaking as I write this.
There will be two entrances to Galaxy’s Edge: one on Grand Avenue by Muppet*Vision 3D and one in Toy Story Land by Alien Swirling Saucers. For this experience, we entered through the Grand Avenue entrance.
After walking through an impressive rock tunnel, we were immediately transported to another planet. In front of us was Black Spire Outpost, a bustling trading port on the planet of Batuu.
My first impression of the land is that it is way bigger than I imagined. It’s advertised as 14 acres but I couldn’t really visualize exactly what 14 acres looked like until I stepped inside. Since it’s still an active construction site, we were only allowed to walk in a short distance. From where we were standing, we could only see a small snippet of the land, and that small snippet was huge!
Here’s what we were able to see from where we were standing:
- The entrance to Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, which will soon be hidden by dense forest
- Towering black spires and observation towers, currently covered in scaffolding
- Detailed rock formations that form the entrance tunnel that will create a breathtaking grand reveal for guests
- Domed buildings that will soon house a marketplace and quick-service dining
- Many construction workers who are working hard to bring this incredible attraction to life
The Millennium Falcon was around the corner out of our view, but I’m OK with that. It will make the grand reveal more magical on opening day!
We spoke with John Georges (Executive Producer, Walt Disney Imagineering) about his experience working on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. As a Star Wars fan himself, he described this experience as a peak in his career that will be hard to top. Where does he go from here? “Vacation,” he said with a laugh.
In just a few months, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will finally open for Walt Disney World guests and I couldn’t be more excited. You can bet money that I will be there, most likely with tears in my eyes and Leia buns in my hair. Will I see you there?
Huge thank you to Disney for inviting us to the special media event and for giving me the experience of a lifetime!
