Actor Robert Downey Jr. will be the godparent for the Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet.

For each new Disney Cruise Line ship, the vessel is assigned a “godparent.” The tradition is a centuries-old one, a maritime custom designed to bring good luck, protection, and safety to the ship and its guests. The ceremonial role involves blessing the ship prior to its maiden voyage, with Disney Cruise Line often choosing individuals who embody connections to the company. This has included Mariah Carey for the Disney Fantasy, Jennifer Hudson for the Disney Dream, and Susan Egan for the Disney Destiny. Now, a godparent has been named for the newest ship, the Disney Adventure.

Robert Downey Jr. Named Godparent of the Disney Adventure

Actor Robert Downey Jr. has been named as the godparent for the Disney Adventure. The news comes ahead of the ship’s maiden voyage next month, out of its home port in Singapore.

“Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Experiences and incoming Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company.

The actor has had a long-spanning career, but within Disney, is best known for his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man, which was the cornerstone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That journey will continue nearly two decades later, when the actor continues his appearances in the MCU – this time as Doctor Doom, which the Disney Legend will portray in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters December 18, 2026.

“It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed … I’ll do my darndest,” Downey said.

The Disney Adventure Will Set Sail Soon

The Disney Adventure will be the largest ship in the fleet when it has its maiden voyage on March 10, 2026. There will be seven themed areas onboard, including several Marvel experiences. At Marvel landing on the top deck of the ship, guests can experience the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise ship (and the longest of its kind at sea): Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run. In the open-air Disney Imagination Garden area, guests can also experience the “Avengers Assemble!” live stage shop with stunts and special effects parts of a battle between Marvel Super Heroes and Villains.

The new ship, which will have its homeport in Singapore, will offer Disney entertainment and hospitality, including character encounters, Broadway-style shows, themed rooms, and over 20 dining and lounge venues.
