REVIEW: Butter Chicken from Sanaa at Animal Kingdom lodge

by | Apr 14, 2021 | Walt Disney World Resorts, WDW Blog

Of the 6,000 or so dishes at Walt Disney World, here are our top reasons why we think the Butter Chicken at Sanaa is the best!

300 dining locations. Over 6,000 different dishes and drinks. All this is just at Walt Disney World (during normal operations).

Of those 6,000 dishes, one dish stands out as one of the best I’ve had at Disney World: Butter Chicken.

How to Order Sanaa Butter Chicken

Where to Get It: Sanaa at Kidani Village at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Kidani Village is not in the same building as Jambo House at Animal Kingdom Lodge. It’s just under a half a mile away in its own giant building with a separate savannah. It’s an adventurous 10-minute walk between the two hotel locations.

How To Order: Look for “Potjie Inspired” on the menu. This gives you the chance to try two flavorful dishes, one from the Journey list and one from the Harvest (plant-based) list.

Butter Chicken is in the Journey options. I’ve also had the Chickpea Wat and Cilantro-Coconut Vegetables and recommend them as well.

What You’ll Get: A bowl brimming with a bright orange sauce, juicy hunks of chicken, and a smell that will make your mouth water.

If you order the Potjie Inspired, you’ll get two bowls of delicious African cooking along with a side of Basmati Rice.

Tasty Tip: Order a side of Naan or go big and order the Indian-Style Bread service.

Sanaa Butter Chicken Review

THE Butter chicken from Sanaa at Animal Kingdom Lodge

Now, I have not had all 6,000 dishes at Disney– If someone has, I want to meet them, shake their hand, and ask, “how did you do it?!?”

But, food is one of our top priorities while on a Disney vacation, so I can confidently say I’ve had hundreds of different Disney eats.

I’ve also written a book about Disney food, and Butter Chicken is so memorable, it’s listed in the table of contents!

With hundreds of dining locations and thousands of dishes to choose from, why is the Butter Chicken at Sanaa the Disney dish I dream about?

The Flavors

Butter Chicken is creamy, salty with a hint of sweetness, and is bursting with mouth-watering flavors. The juicy pieces of chicken are served in a bowl of tomato-based sauce.

The sauce is tomatoes, cream, many spices, and –you guessed it– butter. The Disney version is not too spicy and has a hint of sweetness from the masala-style curry.

The Perfect Bite

If you’ve never had naan, try it at Sanaa. If you love naan, try the Indian-Style Bread Service.

It comes with five different pieces of bread and nine different accompaniments so you can channel your inner Remy and try out mixing different flavors

Keep some of that Naan to dip into your Butter Chicken or get a side order because Naan is the perfect way to soak up all the scrumptious Butter Chicken sauce. It’s also much more polite and less messy than trying to stick your head in the bowl to lick it clean!

Animal Views at Sanaa

Ever had a giraffe watch you eat? At Sanaa, they just might. This restaurant has arguably one of the most unique and memorable dinner views in all of Disney World.

Where else will giraffes walk by the windows while you are eating?

Real giraffes, not animatronic ones. Sometimes those giraffes are joined by wildebeests, gazelle, and even zebras.

Sanaa Décor

Everything– the light fixtures, brightly-colored mixed-pattern fabrics on the booths, authentic artwork– it all adds to the feeling of being transported to another world for your meal.

There are even giant windows all around the restaurant that look out onto the savannah.

Tip: when checking in for your reservation, ask to sit by the windows. Even at night, animals are out wandering the savannah.

Sanaa’s Magical Service

One of the most magical parts of any Disney vacation is the Cast Members.

During normal operations, Sanaa has a number of hosts and servers that are from Africa.

They are always incredibly friendly and love to offer their thoughts on the best dishes, which animals are out grazing or their Disney favorites.

Cast Members are usually some of the biggest Disney fans.
