Daisy is a red river hog that typically resides at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. Last month, she welcomed a baby piglet, a male that has not yet been named. The piglet joins the seven red river hog family members, also known as a “sounder.” Right now, the duo is spending time backstage at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge in order to take time to bond.
Disney shared a bit more information about what it’s like for expecting animal parents living at Disney World. Specifically, the animals play a part in participating in their own health care. Due to a trusting relationship with her keepers, Daisy would enter a specialized crate during her pregnancy that allowed veterinarians to conduct ultrasounds and monitor her piglet’s health during the four-month gestation period.
For now, Daisy will be spending her Mother’s Day relaxing in a mud bath, as wallowing in mud is an important natural behavior for red river hogs. Once they’re ready, you’ll be able to spot Daisy and her piglet on the Pembe Savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge!
