We attended a media preview and got to try out lightsaber training on Galactic Starcruiser. Scroll on for photos and our thoughts.

Lightsaber training on Galactic Starcruiser has for months been heralded as a hallmark experience aboard the Halcyon. And now that we’ve tried it out during a preview of the new Star Wars hotel, we can confirm: It’s awesome.

Danny and Steph Shuster, co-owners of WDW Magazine, got to try out lightsaber training at Galactic Starcruiser. Here are some photos from their experience.

Lightsaber Training: How It Works

The Cast Members are what truly makes the Galactic Starcruiser experience so special. The lightsaber instructor in particular was committed to her role and is exactly the kind of person you would expect to be instructing Padawans.

According to Danny, she had “very cool, very space hippie/zen/yoga instructor vibes.” He’s not wrong.

To get started, everyone learns a couple of stands and the ready position. The instructor then explains how the training probe works. You’ll cycle through learning how to use lightsabers and shields during the training, taking turns with others lined up ahead of and/or behind you. It reminded Danny of an archery class (which you can do at Fort Wilderness, by the way!).

You wait for the instructor to tell you to  ignite the saber. You wait for an all clear to pass the props on and move positions. I used to do archery at summer camp, and it felt reminiscent of that.

In the first few rounds of lightsaber training, there is a tracer beam to help you position. By the end of the session, you are tapped into the Force, and your instructor will take the tracer beam away.

Here’s what Danny had to say about the experience:

I actually found it easier to get the target without the beam. I suspect that they lower the difficulty/increase the hit rate when you are “using the Force” because it really sells the illusion that you have Force powers. I legit felt like I was a Jedi or at least a Padawan. Both the sabers and the shield have light, sound, and haptic feedback to confirm you hit (blocked, really) your target.

Danny also said:

By the end, people were hyped and cheering and shouting tips to each other. When everyone starts to tap into their Force sensitivity, the instructor got very emotional. She is Force-sensitive, and the energy in the room means a lot to her.

Lightsaber training reminded Steph of a Nintendo Wii game—”but in a fabulously immersive environment.”

We’ll dive deeper into the mechanics and experience of lightsaber training in our massive piece on Galactic Starcruiser in our June issue of WDW Magazine. Make sure you’ve subscribed to get a copy of this issue; you won’t want to miss it!
