Plaza Inn’s Fried Chicken Is Iconic — But Is the Long Wait Time Worth It?

by | Jan 2, 2026 | DLR Food

Disneyland’s popular quick-service spot draws crowds every day of the year. But trust me: It’s well worth adding to your must-do list.

As one of Disneyland’s oldest restaurants, Plaza Inn is full of history. But that’s not why this simple quick-service restaurant is so popular. It’s what’s on the menu that draws thousands of guests into its doors daily — specifically, the incredibly crispy and perfectly seasoned fried chicken.

Plaza Inn is home to some seriously standout fried chicken. In fact, the chicken is so popular that it can command pretty lengthy wait times, causing guests to stand in 30-plus minute lines just to enter the restaurant. But is the food served at Plaza Inn really that good?

As a Disneyland veteran of over 35 years, trust me: Yes, the chicken really is that good. And below, I’m breaking down why I’m always willing to wait in line for it.

Why Is Disneyland’s Plaza Inn So Popular?

There are two reasons why Plaza Inn is an institution at Disneyland: quality food and plentiful portions.

Yes, it’s a quick-service restaurant that’s been around since the park first opened (it opened along with Disneyland, but underwent a name change and remodel in the 1960s). But more importantly, Plaza Inn is home to one of Disneyland’s best dining values.

Here, whether you choose the iconic fried chicken or another delicious option on the menu like the pot roast, you can be confident you’re getting an excellent meal. Everything here is tasty. And while the menu has changed a bit over the years, the consistency has not. The food is always good here, and the portions have changed notably less than at other Disneyland dining establishments.

Speaking of portion sizes, Plaza Inn is popular because it offers sizable meals. You’re getting plenty of food for your money when you dine here; the fried chicken, for example, includes three pieces of meat paired with mashed potatoes and a heaping serving of green beans. For $20 to $22, you’re getting a meal that’ll keep you feeling full long after your plate is cleared.

And in a world where prices are always rising (and portions are often shrinking), Plaza Inn delivers a meal that feels like an excellent value.

Should You Wait in Line to Dine at Plaza Inn?

Waiting in a long line for a quick-service meal can be particularly frustrating. These dining spots are supposed to let you grab food fast and get on with your park day, after all. But trust me: Plaza Inn is the one place worth waiting in line for.

During peak times of the day, Plaza Inn can get so crowded that a line stretches out its front door. As a result, you could wind up waiting half an hour (or longer!) to get inside and pick up your plate of food.

But that line builds for good reason. As someone who’s eaten at Plaza Inn many, many times over the last three decades, it’s worthy of its popularity. The food always delivers, and the value is pretty hard to top. There aren’t many places as universally loved as this restaurant, and if you’re only in the park for a day, it’s well worth taking the time to give it a try.

Expert Tips and Tricks to Beat the Plaza Inn Crowds

Don’t want to waste time in a long line just to grab a quick-service meal? Try these tried-and-true tips that I personally use to grab that famous fried chicken without standing around for 30-plus minutes.

Dine During Non-Peak Hours

Hands down, the best way to beat the crowds at Plaza Inn is to dine during “off” (or non-peak) hours of the day. That means you don’t want to head here right at lunch or dinner time; instead, you should dine earlier or later than you normally would.

Plaza Inn typically sees peak crowd levels (and the longest wait times) from 11 AM to 1 PM and 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Stop by outside of those hours, and you’ll likely encounter little to no wait.

Just remember: Plaza Inn does not serve a typical breakfast. In the morning, the restaurant is open for Minnie & Friends Breakfast in the Park, a character dining experience. So, you’ll only want to stop by in the afternoon or evening.

Personally, I like heading here around 2 or 3 PM. Most guests are busy on rides at this point in the afternoon, and it’s both too late for lunch and too early for dinner, making it a sweet spot for no crowds.

Skip Plaza Inn on Friday Nights

Friday nights are notoriously crowded at Disneyland Resort. It’s when locals head to the parks after school and work have ended, and around 4:30 PM, both restaurants and attractions start to get packed. One particularly crowded place is Plaza Inn.

As one of the first quick-service restaurants guests encounter heading down Main Street, U.S.A., it’s a common spot to pop in and grab a bite. Plus, because it’s so notoriously popular for its plentiful portions and good food, it’s a hit with locals and tourists alike.

So, if you’re visiting on a Friday, I highly recommend heading to Plaza Inn earlier in the day. Odds are you won’t need to wait as long. Once dinnertime rolls around, you won’t be able to get in the door (and sometimes, the crowds can stick around until the fireworks end).

Book a Dining Package in Advance (If You Can)

If you’re hoping to beat the crowds, skip a potential long wait, and enjoy evening entertainment like Paint the Night Parade, I recommend booking one of Plaza Inn’s dining packages.

Offered for select evening entertainment, Plaza Inn’s dining packages offer a great meal and a prime reserved spot for parades like Paint the Night and the Main Street Electrical Parade. While that alone is enough to make the dining package worthwhile, I find it’s also helpful at nabbing a reservation so you can avoid the crowds.

When you book a dining package at Plaza Inn, you get to choose a specific time to dine. That makes it easy to walk in and check in, grab your meal, and get on with your day. And if you’re visiting during a particularly crowded time of the year, that can be extra valuable.

Of course, Plaza Inn dining packages do come and go. They may not be available year-round, so I highly recommend checking what’s offered before setting your Disneyland plans in stone.
