During its refurbishment, Peter Pan’s Flight has added a new scene to the ride in Fantasyland of Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.
After a month and a half long refurbishment, Peter Pan’s Flight is now open at Magic Kingdom in Disney World. And along with some general maintenance updates, the ride has reopened with a brand new scene for fan’s to enjoy on the popular attraction.
Peter Pan’s Flight New Scene
According to WDW Magic, a new scene was added during the six-week-long closure for Peter Pan’s Flight. Now, the attraction has updated its Native American village scene, featuring the Never Land Tribe and Tiger Lily. The scene now features the Never Land Tribe at a harvest celebration, with Tiger Lily and her grandmother on a turntable performing near the fire. The tents behind the tribe have also been updated, now depicting a sea turtle, a bear paw print, and stars meant to signify the second star to the right of Neverland.
The previous scene that has been in the area has faced criticism for having stereotypical and outdated depictions of the Native American tribe. The scene update is Disney’s response to this criticism, intended to depict a more respectful portrayal of Native American culture.
This updated scene continues with Disney’s initiative to address cultural sensitivity in its parks, attractions, and films. On Disney+, films and shorts that depict outdated cultural referneces now come with a warning beforehand that states, “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it, and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.”
For parks, Disney has offered the following statement on their continued initiative, “We are reviewing our offerings beyond the screen, which include products, books, music and experiences. While advisories for negative depictions of people and cultures may be added to some offerings, others will be reimagined. We are also investing in new ways to better reflect the rich diversity of stories in our world. This work is ongoing and will evolve as we strive toward a more inclusive tomorrow.”
