On Sale Now- The Pirates of the Caribbean Attraction Special from WDW Magazine!

It’s official: We’re getting a Tarzan’s Treehouse retheme at Disneyland, but we don’t yet know what Disney IP will replace the 1999 film.

The Swiss Family Treehouse opened at Disneyland on Nov. 18, 1962, but following the success of the final Disney Renaissance movie, Tarzan, Disney rethemed the walk-through experience after the animated classic. (A no-brainer: It’s one of the best Disney movies of all time. Thanks, Phil Collins!)

But as Toy Story 3, and then weirdly Toy Story 4, taught us, all good things must come to an end. According to the OC Register, Tarzan’s Treehouse, which is currently closed for refurbishment, will reopen with a different theme.

But what famous Disney movie will fill the void left by Tarzan? The rumor mill is making a good case for Encanto (Antonio does live in a treehouse in his magical room), but we still don’t know for sure.

Here’s What We’d Love to See from the Tarzan’s Treehouse Retheme

Tarzan’s Treehouse has been a Disneyland staple since the last millennium. I’m sad to see it go, but I’m also excited to see what Disney might put in its place. Here are five movies that I think could serve as a great inspiration for the retheme:

1. Encanto

Yes, I’ll humor the rumors first and foremost. Ever since Encanto hit Disney+ in December of last year, it’s been a mega hit. The music, the story, the culture, the colors, Bruno (oh wait, sorry, we don’t talk about him). All of it worked.

And though fans have been clamoring for a retheme of Gran Fiesta Tour at Disney World since Coco was released in 2017, I have a feeling Disney will act more quickly to bring an Encanto attraction to the parks. The film’s ultra success likely means Disney Imagineers will be a little faster to work that IP into new and existing Disney attractions.

In fact, Disneyland has already worked Encanto into a fair bit of attractions, including Main Street Electrical Parade, a Mirabel meet-and-greet, and “it’s a small world.”

2. Frozen II

The Enchanted Forest isn’t just a setting for the second film in the Frozen franchise; it’s a character. This magical forest is ruled by the elemental spirits and would make a unique setting within Disneyland.

Imagine climbing the tallest tree of the Enchanted Forest. What would we see? What would we hear? What would we smell? There’s a lot of cool stuff Imagineers could do with this one.

3. Tangled

When is a tree not a tree? When it’s Rapunzel’s tower from Tangled.

Hear me out: This tree attraction has been a part of Disneyland for 60 years; if Disney is going to change things up, why not really change things up and transform the tree into the tall tower that Mother Gothel locks Rapunzel inside?

Imagine the creativity that would go into climbing a trail of hair to get to the top of the tower.

4. Luca

Humor me on this tower theme a moment longer. Toy Story IP can be found in just about every inch of Disney Property, but what about some of the newer Pixar films?

Could Alberto’s tower serve as inspiration for the retheme? Photo courtesy of Disney/Pixar

Luca is a beautiful film that came out last year and features an awesome dilapidated tower where Alberto lives. Exploring this tower on the Italian seaside would be a wonderful way to immerse ourselves in this rich and underrated Pixar film.

5. Guardians of the Galaxy

So it has to be a tree, you say? Fine, then here’s my final offer.

Let’s turn Tarzan’s Treehouse into a massive Groot that we can climb and explore. A little weird? Certainly. But awesome and unique? You betcha.

Tarzan’s Treehouse Retheme: What Do You Think?

Though Encanto is the most likely candidate for the retheme of Tarzan’s Treehouse, inquiring minds want to know: What do you think the retheme will be? And what do you hope it will be?
