The new series Iwájú is coming to Disney+ in February 2024. Learn more about the series, a collaboration between Disney and Kugali.
This year is an exciting one for Disney+, with plenty of new series set to come to the streaming platform. This year we’ll get new Star Wars and Marvel series, including original tales for the service. And this February, Disney will be releasing a series that was first announced back in 2020.
New Series Iwájú Coming to Disney+
Iwájú is a collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African entertainment company Kugali. The six-part series will premiere exclusively on Disney+ beginning February 28. The series is set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, a coming-of-age story that follows Tola. Tola is a young girl from a wealthy island, best friends with self-taught tech expert Kole. In the series, they discover the secrets (and dangers) in their different worlds.

The series is produced by Disney’s Christina Chen with a screenplay by Olufikayo Ziki Adeola and Halima Hudson. The show features the voices of Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan, and Weruche Opia. Directed by Adeola, he shared, “Crafting the narrative of ‘Iwájú’ has been a journey of creative alchemy, blending the rich cultural tapestry of Lagos with imaginative leaps into the future. Collaborating with my Kugali co-founders and the visionary artists at Walt Disney Animation Studios has been nothing short of magical. The heartbeat of my hometown resonates through every scene, and I am thrilled for the world to experience this unique fusion of tradition and futurism.”

The documentary special was filmed across three continents, sharing how the founders of Kugali brought the series to reality alongside Walt Disney Animation.
