Parts of Monstropolis to Open Next Year at Disney World

by | Aug 16, 2026 | Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World

Disney has confirmed that guests will be able to step into Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027, even as work continues on the land’s massive Monsters, Inc. door coaster.

Get ready to enter the monster world! Disney has confirmed that parts of Monstropolis will officially open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027, giving guests their first opportunity to explore the new Monsters, Inc.-themed land.

The opening timeframe was announced during Horizons: A Carousel of Progress at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where Disney also revealed a huge collection of new details about what guests will find inside Monstropolis.

There is one important distinction, though: Disney specifically said parts of the land will open in 2027 while work continues on the door coaster. An opening date for the coaster itself has not yet been announced.

Parts of Monstropolis Will Open in 2027

Monstropolis is currently under construction in the former Muppets Courtyard area of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which previously housed Muppet*Vision 3D, PizzeRizzo, and Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano.

Disney says construction is moving forward, with structural steel rising behind the walls as Imagineers transform the area into the monster city from Pixar’s Monsters, Inc.

Now, we know we won’t have to wait until the entire project is finished to get our first look inside.

Parts of Monstropolis will begin welcoming guests in 2027, although Disney has not yet announced exactly which locations will be included in the initial opening.

The land’s storyline gives a fun explanation for why humans are suddenly allowed inside Monstropolis. Following Mike and Sulley’s discovery that laughter is more powerful than screams, monsters have slowly become less afraid of humans. The city has even established a Department of Human Relations to help the two worlds better understand one another.

That leads to H.U.M.A.N. Day — “Humans Understanding Monsters Are Nice” — a special celebration marking the first time humans have officially been invited into the monster world.

New Monsters, Inc. Show Coming to the Glob Theater

Among the experiences announced for Monstropolis is a new show at the Glob Theater called “Welcome to Monstropolis.”

Mike and Sulley will host the production, which is designed to introduce human visitors to their city and show just how much monsters and humans have in common.

The show will also feature a brand-new song called “Welcome to Monstropolis,” written by Disney Legend Randy Newman. It marks the first song Newman has composed specifically for a Disney theme park.

Disney confirmed guests will hear the song next year when Monstropolis begins opening to humans, making the Glob Theater one of the experiences we know is tied to the 2027 debut.

New Restaurants Coming to Monstropolis

Disney also revealed two new dining locations planned for the land.

Harryhausen’s Restaurant, which Monsters, Inc. fans will recognize as the location of Mike and Celia’s memorable date, will come to life at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The restaurant will feature a new menu that Disney says will be unlike anything else currently offered at Walt Disney World. Guests will also be able to watch a many-tentacled Audio-Animatronic sushi chef at work, although Disney has confirmed there will be more than just sushi on the menu.

For something more casual, guests will be able to visit Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, named for the six-legged Fear Tech mascot seen in Monsters University. Disney describes it as Monstropolis’ top-rated spot to grab a slice.

Next door will be the Monsters University Alumni Club, where guests can explore references to the university’s clubs, fraternities, and sororities. Inside, the Scarer’s Club will pay tribute to legendary scarers from Monsters University’s past.

Scareporium Will Offer Monstropolis Souvenirs

Disney has also revealed the name of one of the land’s shopping locations.

Scareporium will give human tourists somewhere to pick up a souvenir commemorating their visit to the monster world.

Disney hasn’t shared details about the merchandise that will be available yet, but the shop will be another piece of the larger effort to make Monstropolis feel like a functioning city rather than simply a collection of Monsters, Inc. attractions.

What About the Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster?

The biggest question surrounding the 2027 announcement is what it means for Monstropolis’ headlining attraction.

Disney is building its first-ever suspended coaster inside the new land, taking guests into the Monsters, Inc. factory and through the enormous door vault seen in the original movie.

The attraction will also feature the first vertical lift on a Disney coaster, hoisting riders into the air before sending them into the door vault.

However, Disney confirmed at D23 that work is continuing on the door coaster as parts of Monstropolis prepare to open in 2027. That means guests shouldn’t assume the coaster will be ready when the first areas of the land debut. Disney has not yet announced an opening year or date for the attraction.

When Will Monstropolis Open at Disney World?

Disney has only announced 2027 for the first portions of Monstropolis and has not provided a specific season or opening date.

We also don’t yet know exactly which restaurants, shops, and experiences will be part of the initial opening beyond Disney confirming that guests will hear Randy Newman’s new “Welcome to Monstropolis” song next year.

What is clear is that Disney’s Hollywood Studios is getting a major new addition sooner than we previously knew. Humans will officially be welcomed into Monstropolis beginning in 2027, with the city continuing to grow as work progresses on its massive door vault coaster.

We’ll continue to share updates as Disney reveals exactly what will open first and when guests can experience the completed Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
