3 Reasons I Am Excited for Monstropolis in Walt Disney World

by | Jun 4, 2026 | Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World, Walt Disney World News

Learn new details about Disney World’s upcoming Monsters, Inc. Land, including Monstropolis streets, immersive experiences, H.U.M.A.N. Day, and more.

There is a lot of construction currently underway at the Most Magical Place on Earth. Within a few years, we are promised the chance to visit Piston Peak, the Madrigal family’s Casita, and even a villainous kingdom. But the place I am most excited to set foot in? Monstropolis.

Monsters Inc. is a beloved franchise that is RIPE for the theme park picking. I mean, who didn’t watch that movie and think about how awesome a door-themed coaster would be!? So in 2024, when Disney announced a Monsters Inc.-themed land would be arriving at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (door coaster and all!) I was giddy!

And after a super-sneak peek at the upcoming land last week at a Disney media event (no photos allowed, but we’re talking hard-hat-and-safety-vest-behind-the-wall- sneak-peek), I am even more excited to step into Monstropolis. Here are a few things we learned directly from the Imagineers that piqued my interest:

They Are Fully Building Out the Streets of Monstropolis.

Not only are we getting the door coaster, Harryhausen’s, and a theater show, but we are also getting full-blown streets of Monstropolis. During our preview, we were able to go on the second story of the former PizzeRizzo to see just how they’re creating the streets – and it’s much bigger than I anticipated. The concept art we got to see reminded me of Main Street U.S.A meets Zootopia – but in Monster form, of course.

We were told we get to walk the streets of Monstropolis, just like Mike & Sulley at the beginning of the original film. But they also worked with the team at Pixar, including Monsters Inc. director Pete Docter, to build out storefronts and other industries we might not have seen in the film – for example, a door manufacturer or a canister factory. I don’t know why I’ve never thought about it, but Monsters. Inc. (the company, not the film) doesn’t manufacture its own supplies! They contract the local Monstropolis door and canister factories to do that. Duh. (Seriously, how smart are the people at Pixar!?) And now we get to see it!

We Get to Interact with Monsters.

During our time behind the wall, the presenting Imagineers said the words “immersive” and “interactive” over and over again, making it clear that the intention is to have this be one of the most immersive lands they’ve ever done. I asked if monster interactions would be in the form of screens, animatronics, puppets, performers, or new tech, and they simply smiled and said, “You’re going to interact with monsters.” (I assumed they couldn’t tell me yet, but hey, always shoot your shot.)

Personally, I hope they include Monster puppets, similar to Zootopia in Shanghai Disneyland. If you’re unfamiliar, several times throughout the day, various animals pop out of the windows and engage with each other, and the guests live. It’s a spontaneous, unscheduled moment and you never know who you’re going to see! It truly makes the land feel alive and lived in. Regardless of how they do it, it’s exciting to think you could engage with the residents of Monstropolis – and not just the big-name stars of the films! There is such rich world-building in this franchise that it truly lends itself to fun and silly moments, even beyond the heavy-hitter attractions.

They’re Going Wild With the Details.

Speaking of world-building, there is so much fun to be had with this universe – and the Imagineers we talked to seemed giddy about some of the upcoming small details. They specifically mentioned (or had photos of things such as) the STALK DON’T STALK street signs and the two-headed pigeon we see in the movie.

They also talked about how much fun it is to build a city whose residents come in all shapes and sizes. There are big monsters, small monsters, really tall & slender monsters, really wide & fluffy monsters, two-headed monsters – and they all live in Monstropolis. So naturally, the city has to reflect its unique neighbors. In the concept art of the street, we saw residences and business entrances in all shapes and sizes to accommodate all types of monsters.

This concept art again reminded me of Zootopia in Shanghai, where half the fun of the land is just looking at all the details – from the differently sized doorways to the local business signage to flyers on bulletin boards. It appears that the Imagineers are going for that level of detail, and I know I, for one, cannot wait to spend hours in the land to soak up as much Monster silliness and detail as I can find.

BONUS: They’re Really Emphasizing the Cast Members.

As a former Cast Member myself, hearing the Disney leadership and Imagineering team talk about the importance of the Cast really makes my heart happy. Disney fans know that they are the true magic of the parks.

Specifically, when it comes to Monsters Inc. Land, the Cast Members are serving as Monster-Human Relations, as they welcome us into Monstropolis on H.U.M.A.N. Day (Humans Understanding Monsters Are Nice). Each Cast Member across all lines of business will play a role in keeping the story alive for Guests as they explore the city.

We also learned that Disney has a tradition of inviting the current park Cast Members to sign a beam in the construction phase. Meaning Disney’s Hollywood Studios Cast will soon be leaving their mark forever on Monstropolis. I think this is such a fun way to honor the people whose entire job is making sure Guests have the most magical experience possible.

And lastly, we were told that with all of the new construction across the Disney property, they have created over 5,000 new jobs for Cast Members in Central Florida. Disney is already the largest single-site employer in the state, and it’s always good to see more jobs being created.

Personally, I cannot wait to learn more about this new land and see Monsters Inc. come to life. I truly hope it’s as immersive and engaging as we were told, as this sneak peek – this universe is perfect for a theme park land, and if they pull it off as well as this concept art, I think it’ll be a hit for guests of all ages!

Thank you to Disney for inviting us for a tour of the upcoming Monsters, Inc. land as part of the Cool KIDS SUMMER media event.
