He’s worn dots, diamonds, and even a silver jumpsuit. No, we’re not talking about Ken’s wardrobe in the Barbie movie. It’s just a few of the 100+ costumes for the fashion icon Mickey Mouse. According to the book The Art of Disney Costuming by Jeff Kurtti and the Staff of the Walt Disney Archives, Mickey has over a hundred costumes The 2007 book Walt Disney World: Where Dreams Come True published by Disney editions says there are 175+ costumes worn at the park by Mickey Mouse.  Some sites estimate Mickey’s wardrobe to be in the 500+ range. Can you imagine the size of that walk-in closet? Probably a bit bigger than this…

When you think Mickey, you may not think “style icon,” but this mouse is more than red pants and yellow bowties. His wardrobe includes everything from a scuba suit to George Washington to a farmer to serious Dad vibes in his Hawaiian shirt at the Ohana character breakfast. Through the decades Mickey has always been on trend and we have dug into our Disney library, our phones, old park maps, and asked readers to find some of our favorite Mickey looks from the last 50+ years.

Going Beyond Basic

Mickey’s costume choices go so far beyond basic! Mickey Mouse has people designing clothes just for him for specific events, like Cast Member Danny who designed Mickey’s outfit for a recent Make-a-Wish event. Guess they probably can’t buy off the rack for Mickey.

One of the best places to see Mickey in different outfits is to go to Minnie’s Seasonal Dine in Hollywood Studios. Over the course of the year, there are five themes with dishes and ensembles to match. Here is Mickey in his Silver Screen Dine outfit, which usually happens in January-February.

Totally 80s

Insert the VCR rewind sound because we’re hopping in the Delorean to go back about 40 years to the 1980s.

This was the decade of Tokyo Disneyland and EPCOT grand openings, the release of Fox and the Hound and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, getting soaked on Splash Mountain and so much more.

This was also the decade when Disney started to mix it up for Mickey and expand his attire in the parks beyond his classic look. Mickey started to have more uniforms for various careers like Chef Mickey, pictured here with Chef Paul Bocuse in front of Les Chefs de France at EPCOT in the 1980s.

Mickey had to have a special outfit to get ready for the premiere of MGM Studios (now known as Hollywood Studios) in May 1989.

The decade ended with the release of The Little Mermaid and the start of Disney’s animated movie Renaissance.

Majorly 90s

As if! 1990s fashion was all over the place from grunge flannels to the plaid skirts and knee highs Cher and her friends learned how to drive in. Mickey’s clothes were all about the bling, the shine and the color. You don’t get much more 1990s than this Space Traveler Mickey and Friends look.

Celebrate! Anniversary Looks

There are a few key ingredients when Disney parks want to celebrate: food, merchandise, decorations, and in recent years, celebratory threads for characters. Mickey is always always in the mix with the anniversary ensembles, no matter where in the world the celebration is.

Mickey and Minnie are at the height of Parisian fashion with a style almost as effervescent as the sparkling Eiffel Tower to celebrate Disneyland Paris’ 30th anniversary.

Mickey’s Walt Disney World anniversary looks have changed from his look in 1986 to celebrate WDW’s 15th anniversary to the 50th anniversary in 2021.

For the 25th, Mickey kept things simple. Who needs a special outfit when the backdrop is a giant pink balloon cake castle?

Holidays Through the Years

He may not have a belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly, but Mickey Mouse loves festive fashions. It may be Halloween one day and Christmas the next at some Disney parks, but let’s not forget Thanksgiving.

One of my favorite Mickey’s holiday looks is from Mickey’s Christmas Carol, which has been spotted at Make-a-Wish events.

I’m a big fan of Santa Goofy, but Mickey does rock the red suit.

Disney World has a number of different holiday looks for Mickey. Back in 2001 Mickey was looking quite dapper in his holiday top hat. Oh the days when you could see the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Hollywood Studios.

It’s not a spectacle of lights, but it does snow during Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade at Magic Kingdom.

All Aboard!

Whether he’s on the sea or under it, Mickey has ensembles specifically for being on, or near, the water. Mickey swaps the Captain’s hat for a colorful hoodie during Pixar Day at Sea. When the Disney Cruise Line stops in Alaska, Mickey is ready for the rain.

Sports!

Mickey has all the gear for going under the sea. Over 40 years Mickey has upgraded his scuba tech. From the 1980s to 2023!

Mickey’s Wardrobe Staples: Robes and Hawaiian Shirts

When we think of Mickey’s style, images of bowties and fancy jackets come to mind. But this mouse has a few other charming wardrobe staples: robes and Hawaiian shirts. It all started with Sorcerer’s Apprentice in his classic red robe and blue star-studded hat.

Dads love their Hawaiian shirts and so does Mickey!  These are but a few of the many fanciful printed button-downs that are bringing Mickey joy. When in Hawaii, you must wear a Hawaiian shirt.

Mickey even has a Hawaiian shirt for Castaway Cay!

Back in the 2000s, my son’s favorite Character Breakfast was at Restaurantosaurus at Animal Kingdom. Sadly the breakfast is gone but we will always have the memories of Mickey’s dino-style Hawaiian shirt.

These days you can find Mickey in a Hawaiian shirt over at ‘Ohana at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. He probably needs to channel his inner dad to keep Stitch in line.

Then and Now

Just like us, Mickey’s style has evolved. He does have to stay on trend and has essential costumes that are updated for the times. Farmer Mickey at EPCOT Garden Grill got an update from his look in the 2000s.

What would a Disney park be without a parade? Mickey has specific looks created for every parade. Like this colorful look for the Festival of Fantasy Parade in Magic Kingdom.
