As the very first ride at any Disney park to star the big cheese himself, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is sure to bring in the crowds!
Lucky for us, we were invited to attend a Media Preview for the attraction before it opened to the public, and we’ve rounded up all the information you might need for your next visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
A huge thank you to Disney for inviting us to this media event! Now let’s dive in and talk about exactly what you can expect from Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
Walk down Hollywood Boulevard, and a neon marquee designed to pay tribute to the golden era of movie making will beckon you towards the Chinese Theatre. Pass under the flashing sign, and you’ll feel just like you’re attending a big Hollywood premier.
Instead of the giant movie theatre pre-show room you might remember from The Great Movie Ride, you’ll now enter one of two different smaller pre-show rooms. Inside you’ll enjoy an adorable Mickey Mouse short called,Mickey’s Perfect Picnic.
Be forewarned. The song you hear during the pre-show, then again during the ride, will be stuck in your head for eternity. Yes, it’s that catchy.
The film ends abruptly with a big explosion that literally blows open the screen! Goofy then invites you to step directly through the giant hole in the screen and into the colourful cartoon world of Mickey Mouse and friends.
Step into one of the absolutely adorable ride vehicles and make sure to pull down on your lap bar. This here’s the wildest train in the city!
Make sure you pay attention to the bright colors of your train, painted to look just like a cartoon! After all, you are inside the cartoon world for the duration of this attraction.
But don’t worry about sitting in the front row on this train ride. The vehicles are trackless, and even if you start off sitting in the front, you could easily end up somewhere else. You never know what might happen with Goofy as your train conductor!
The Perfect Picnic
The first stop on your journey will be a scene right out of Mickey’s Perfect Picnic, equipped with lovely water fountain, chirping birds, and green grass all around.
You’ll pass through many different scenes and even encounter animatronic versions of Mickey and Minnie throughout the ride!
Just make sure to hold on to your ears. There’s a twister passing through one of those scenes that’s sure to suck up unwitting hats and sunglasses.
Over The Falls
The peril won’t stop after you make it out of the twister. Next you’ll find yourself teetering over the edge of a waterfall. But don’t worry, there’s no actual drop. Imagineers use clever projection technology to make it look like you’ve gone over the falls, but your vehicle doesn’t actually move during this scene.
If you have an aversion to 3D rides like Star Tours or Flight of Passage, just close your eyes during this part and it won’t make you dizzy. And to be clear, there are no 3D glasses involved in this attraction… the Imagineers have developed a new 2 1/2D technology that creates 3D effects in a 2D world! Neat, huh?
After quite the adventure, you’ll meet back up with Goofy and find yourself in the park where your journey began. Well, a different part of the park. But Mickey and Minnie will be there too, singing their adorable tune.
Wondering if Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is for you? Yes. Yes it is. How do I know that? Because this ride is for everyone!
There’s no height requirement. That means it doesn’t matter how little you are, everyone is welcomed to ride.
If you’re in a scooter, wheelchair or have mobility issues, not to worry! Just let Cast Members know, and you’ll be directed to a separate car that moves off the track and remains still while you take as much time as needed to board. You will, however, need to stand and transfer out of your chair and into the ride vehicle.
FastPass+ is available for this attraction. It’s a highly sought after reservation so make sure you get up nice and early on your FastPass+ reservation day to score one! (Or better yet, let your Destinations to Travel agent take care of that for you!)
Don’t have a FastPass+? Get to Hollywood Studios at least 30 minute before park open, or an hour early on the busier days, and position yourself to get in line right in front of the Chinese Theatre as soon as the park opens.
If you can’t get there early, and find yourself waiting in line, download the Disney Parks Play app and enjoy some of the new games designed around Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. You’ll be riding in no time.
Mickey Shorts Theatre
While you’re at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, don’t forget to stop by the new Mickey Shorts Theatre across from Echo Lake to watch the original animated short, “Vacation Fun,” starring both Mickey and Minnie!
It’s an absolutely adorable little film, and the seats are not only comfy, they’re also incredibly stylish! There’s a reason the theatre is called, the Mickey Shorts Theatre (nudge nudge, wink wink).
After the film, you’ll be able to jump into scenes right out of the movie with some super fun photo-ops waiting for you as you exit.
Make Room In Your Budget
It’s no surprised that Disney has released a new line of merchandise specific to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. So here’s a little peek at what you can expect to see!
