Can’t make it to Disney for the Festival of the Arts? We’re bringing Disney to you! Here’s our Deconstructed Breakfast recipe!

Breakfast has always been my favorite meal. One of my fondest memories as a child involved traveling to my Nana’s house and waking up in the morning to the smell of bacon frying. So, when EPCOT brought back their Deconstructed Breakfast to the International Festival of the Arts this year, I decided it was high time I made it myself!

EPCOT has a booth at the festival this year called The Deconstructed Dish, full of diagonal, sideways, and backwards ways to serve some of your favorite dishes, including breakfast.

Served as a shake with chai tea, candied bacon, a waffle crisp… and for our grown-up friends, a little bourbon cream, this drink has all the best things about breakfast rolled into one delightful beverage.

Am I ‘bacon’ you hungry? Then let’s get started!

A couple of notes first, regarding the ingredients. I couldn’t find the Twinings Chai tea served in Disney, so I used Tazo Chai instead. Use whatever chai you can find on hand, or, if you’re making this for your little ones and you don’t want to use caffeine, try an spiced herbal tea or a rooibos tea.

I also could not find bourbon cream anywhere, so … I made my own! It was shockingly easy to make, so I will link to the recipe for homemade bourbon cream liqueur in the directions below. Alternatively, you could use Bailey’s if you cannot find bourbon cream, and you do not want to try your hand at making your own.

INGREDIENTS

  • Candied bacon, either in strips or crumbled. To make candied bacon, I used this recipe. You’ll want this pre-made before you begin assembling your shake.
  • 2 bags chai tea
  • Boiled water for steeping
  • 2 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 2oz bourbon cream (or Bailey’s, or 1oz maple syrup if making without alcohol)
  • 1 waffle crisp, for garnishing

  1. Start by steeping your chai tea bags in a mug filled about one third of the way with boiling water. Don’t fill it up too high, as you want the chai taste to be extra concentrated, so that the flavour comes through in the shake. Steep for about ten minutes, then let your tea cool completely in the fridge.
  2. While your tea is cooling, if you are going to make your bourbon cream from scratch, now is a great time to get that started. Here is the recipe I used. With this recipe, the bourbon cream comes together in about five minutes.
  3. Place all ingredients into a blender except for the candied bacon and the waffle crisp, and blend on high for about thirty seconds.
  4. Pour your shake into your favorite glass, garnish your waffle crisp and bacon on top of the shake however you please, and enjoy!

(this recipe serves one shake, multiply the ingredients if you are making more than one serving.)

This may not have been the same experience as smelling that bacon in Nana’s kitchen (and I think she may have gaped at the idea of drinking your breakfast), but even so, this was quite a tasty little shake.

I personally wish that there had been a bit more of a smoky flavour with the candied bacon that wasn’t present in the drink, but I may experiment with adding a small drop of liquid smoke next time, to see if that brings home the bacon just a bit more.

What’s your favorite meal of the day? Does it involve breakfast foods? If so, you should definitely make this Deconstructed Breakfast recipe and tell us how yours turned out on our Facebook page!
