Is Aurora Sleeping Beauty? And Other Disney Princess Questions

by | Dec 20, 2021 | Disney Movies, WDW Blog

For a girl that slept for 100 years, Sleeping Beauty has a pretty complex identity. Did you know that she actually has three different names?

And what about Elsa… is she a Disney Princess? And does every Princess have a sidekick? How old are these ladies, anyhow?

Here are answers to those Disney Princess questions we hear the most:

1. Is Aurora Sleeping Beauty?

In the original story written by the Grimm brothers in the 19th century, Sleeping Beauty was named Briar Rose. When Disney made a new version of the tale it was decided she would use both the names Aurora and Sleeping Beauty, although the three fairies refer to her as Briar Rose in order to conceal her identity.

In the Disney version, her parents named her “Aurora.” This translates to “the dawn” from Latin because it felt that they waited an eternity for their baby, and when she finally came she was a great source of sunshine in their life.

2. Is Elsa a Disney Princess?

Well, yes and no. It is true that Elsa used to be a Disney Princess when she was just a wee girl and her parents were still alive. Although her time as a princess was short-lived, she glowed up to be the powerful Ice Queen we all know and love.

Later in Frozen 2, her sister Anna also had a chance at the throne once Elsa stepped down from being Queen of Arrendelle. If you’re feeling a little puzzled by the menagerie of princesses, we don’t blame you, as they’ve changed over the years.

Surprisingly, there are only twelve confirmed OFFICIAL Disney Princesses and one rumored newcomer. Unfortunately, neither Anna nor Elsa made the cut, but they still hold a place in many hearts as highly regarded Disney Princesses.

3. Does Every Disney Princess Have a Sidekick?

Although this may seem like a trend amongst Disney royalty, believe it or not, not all Disney Princesses have a sidekick. A plethora of the Disney Princesses do have sidekicks and some even have a few!

Cinderella has her infamous mice buddies, most notably Gus, who she rescues in the opening scene of the movie.

Out of all the official Disney Princesses, it’s safe to say that Snow White has the most sidekicks.

She has the Seven Dwarfs that are known to cause antics but also provide her support and comic relief throughout the movie. In addition, she has a horde of forest animals that come to the rescue (and to do dishes).

4. How Many Sisters Does Ariel Have?

Out of all the Disney Princesses, Ariel has the most siblings. In fact, she has six older sisters who share the title of princess. Triton and his wife made the interesting decision of giving them all names that start with “A”

There is only one Disney Princess that has a biological brother—three of them, to be exact! The bold Merida from Brave. To make her even more unique, she is also the only princess that doesn’t have a love interest.

Anna and Elsa are the only other princesses that have biological siblings – each other! Frozen is the only Disney princess movie in which the storyline is centered around the relationship of two sisters.

5. How Old Is Snow White?

Snow White takes the cake for being the youngest Disney Princess, at a mere 14 years old! You may be surprised at how young all the princesses actually are—the oldest being just 19.

  • Snow White is 14
  • Jasmine, 15
  • Aurora, 16
  • Mulan, 16
  • Merida, 16
  • Belle, 17
  • Pocahontas, 18
  • Rapunzel, 18
  • Cinderella, 19
  • Tiana, 19

Some of the Disney Princess’ ages are a mystery as they are never explicitly stated, although if you look at clues from the movie you can figure it out. Pssttt, for instance: In Tangled, Rapunzel’s story begins on her birthday.
