The July issue of WDW Magazine is all about the 1990s at Walt Disney World. That means stories about attractions, hotels, and restaurants from the decade, plus modern experiences inspired by Disney films of the 1990s.
Tim here, Editorial Director of our print and digital magazines, and I’ve never been more excited for one of our decades-inspired issues. Our July issue of WDW Magazine celebrates the 1990s at Walt Disney World — and I’ve gotta tell you, it’s all that and a bag of chips.
This marks our third-annual decade issue of the magazine (check out the 1970s issue and 1980s issue to complete the collection), and they continue to be fan favorites. These issues are packed with Disney nostalgia, including stories about what it was like to wander the parks and resorts decades ago. For me, the 1990s Issue is extra special, because my first-ever Disney trip was in 1993. One of my earliest memories is holding a Dumbo plush up against a blue sky, Cinderella Castle’s towers framing the vision.
What’s Inside our 1990s at Walt Disney World Issue?
So what’s in this issue all about Walt Disney World in the 1990s? Here’s the 411:
- The Disney Renaissance: The Disney Renaissance technically began in the late 1980s with The Little Mermaid, but every other film from this beloved period of Disney filmmaking debuted in the ’90s. In this special issue, I’ll take you into all the corners of the parks, hotels, and Disney Springs to find each and every experience we can based on films like Hercules, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast.
- The 1994 New Tomorrowland transformation: How Bowers of RetroWDW paints a picture of the complete transformation of Tomorrowland in the mid-1990s. Relive your memories of what this land was like before and after the major change.
- Updates to Space Ranger Spin: Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is a classic Disney ride from the 1990s. Staff editor Morgan Flaherty shares her memories of the ride as a child — and new memories with her own children. Plus, she dives into what’s changed for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin following the major update, and details what other Buzz Lightyear rides are like around the globe.
- Making Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Matthew Krul of Imagination Skyway examines the research trips that Joe Rohde and his team of Imagineers took during the 1990s as they prepared to build Animal Kingdom. Find out what they learned in Africa and Asia and how those lessons informed the park.
- Stage shows and parades of the 1990s: Live entertainment hit different in the ’90s. From Main Street Electrical Parade and Aladdin’s Royal Caravan to The Magical World of Barbie and The Hunchback of Notre Dame: A Musical Adventure, remember what it was like to be entertained at Walt Disney World in the 1990s.
Plus, we’ll show you how to meet the characters of Disney Afternoon, reminisce on the great TGIF sitcoms that filmed at Walt Disney World in the 1990s, trace the history of Disney pin trading, and explore how fandoms like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Who Framed Roger Rabbit are still celebrated at Disney World today.
