Fantasmic! Returns to Disneyland: The Newly Reimagined Show Premieres May 24, 2024

Fantasmic!, Disneyland’s longest-running nighttime spectacular, is back after an extended hiatus, and we’re sharing everything we know about the newest version of the show.

On May 24, 2024, Disneyland Park welcomes back a guest favorite: Fantasmic! The thrilling, fireworks-filled nighttime spectacular has been a staple of the theme park since it first opened back in 1992. It’s wowed guests for the last 30-plus years – but in April 2023, it shuttered temporarily due to some special effects gone awry. Disney promised an updated show when it returned, and the reimagined version is set to premiere.

When Fantasmic! returns on May 24, it’ll feature brand-new special effects and a completely reimagined battle scene between Sorcerer Mickey and Maleficent. Plus, there are other changes that’ll please guests, including the return of the iconic Peter Pan scene… with some cool upgrades, of course. Below, we’re sharing everything you need to know about the updates to Fantasmic!

Fantasmic! Will Keep Its Same Storyline

If you’ve long loved watching Fantasmic! at Disneyland Park, good news: The show’s storyline will remain virtually unchanged. In fact, the biggest changes you’ll see story-wise are actually revisions that bring the show back to some of its original scenes.

For example, we mentioned above that the Peter Pan scene featuring Peter himself battling Captain Hook aboard the Sailing Ship Columbia will return. In 2017, Fantasmic! was updated and this original scene was replaced by one inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Now, after a six-year hiatus, Peter and Hook are back – and their scene has been reimagined. It’ll now feature The Lost Boys for the first time, who join Peter Pan and Wendy as they face off with Captain Hook.

Other components of the show’s storyline that guests already know and love, such as appearances from Disney Princesses like Belle, Ariel, and Rapunzel with their princes and moments from films like The Lion King and Fantasia will come to life on the Rivers of America once again.

Familiar Special Effects Will Return

While much of the excitement around Fantasmic! in its newly reimagined form centers around its special effects, fans will be thrilled to learn that the vibrant show will remain true to its original form. When the newest version of Fantasmic premieres on May 24, it’ll still feature a a captivating display of colorful images and scenes, an exciting musical score, and plenty of imagination.

The show will use state-of-the-art projections to bring beloved Disney stories to life, along with live performances and character appearances. The projections will appear on three giant mist screens spanning 60 feet wide by 30 feet tall. Throughout moments of the show, dazzling rays of light and sparkling pyrotechnics will enhance the storyline. And keep an eye out for that iridescent mist that really makes a statement!

Plus, there will be plenty of water effects, too. Fantasmic! will feature 21 fountains that dance along with the music, along with six “whale tails” that shoot water high into the sky (and towards the audience).

Mickey’s Big Battle Scene is All New

The special effects malfunction that occurred in April 2023 ultimately resulted in the removal of a pivotal piece within Fantasmic!: Maleficent in dragon form, who battles Sorcerer Mickey at the show’s climax. The towering dragon won’t be appeared in the newly-reimagined show. Instead, she’s been replaced and the battle between hero and villain has been revamped.

Now, when Sorcerer Mickey and Maleficent meet, Mickey will gather all of his magical powers and use his imagination to battle Maleficent in her human form, cloaked in her iconic dark gown with scepter in hand. As they battle, Maleficent will rise to reach a height of 35 feet – and she’ll wow guests as she appears to light the Rivers of American on fire.

Sparkling pyrotechnics and impressive powers of imagination come together to create a very memorable new scene. And we know we can’t wait to see it firsthand!
