Confused? Here’s the fully skinny on everything Disney Genie Service and Disney Genie+.
Huge news dropped this week when Disney announced that parks will be retiring FastPass, FastPass+, and Disney MaxPass. A service called Disney Genie and Disney Genie+ will take their place starting in the fall.
It raises, oh, let’s say a whole bunch of questions and concerns.
🧞 But you don’t have to rub a lamp to get the scoop on Disney Genie. (Lamp-rubbing is totally optional and at your discretion.) You’ve just gotta read on, Padawan.
What is Disney Genie Free Service?
The first and most obvious question about Disney Genie would be what the heck is it. The video below does a pretty good job covering most of your bases.
But if you want the fast facts, here’s a quick rundown of what Disney Genie does:
- 🧞 You Already Have the Lamp
- Disney Genie is built into the My Disney Experience and the Disneyland apps
- ✨ His Services are Complimentary
- As opposed to the paid Disney Genie+ service
- 🧞 Disney Genie asks for your favorites
- Tell Genie your must-do attractions, dining, and entertainment as well as your interests (e.g., Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, etc.)
- ✨ Genie Listens to Your Wishes:
- The app uses your faves and interests to plan out a flexible itinerary, which you can adjust as the day goes on
- 🧞 He Can Tell the Future
- My Tip Board lets you see current and future estimated standby times as well as the next available reservations so you can maximize your time better
- 🍔 How Bout a Lil More Baklava?
- Disney Genie folds in dining reservations and waitlists as well as mobile ordering to streamline your experience
- 🧞 Friend Like Him Virtual Assistant
- Answers your questions about rides, wait times, and more (unfortunately only in text and not in the Genie voice)
What is Disney Genie+?
Disney Genie+ is a paid service that includes THREE WISHES not found in the free service. Coincidence? We didn’t think so, either.
Here is a breakdown of each Genie+ service.
1. 🧞 Lightning Lane Access
So what about if you want to reserve a place in line?
Some attractions—like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure (Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is NO LONGER a virtual queue ride)—will continue to use the virtual queue feature.
For others, you’ll want to upgrade to the paid Disney Genie+ service.
Disney Genie+ and the Individual Attraction Selections option combine to replace FastPass+, FastPass, and MaxPass.
For the cost of Genie+, you’ll be able to use the Disney Genie feature to reserve an arrival time at select attractions with a Lightning Lane entrance. Keep in mind that you’ll only be able to reserve a spot for one attraction at a time for the entire day (keep scrolling for info on Individual Attraction selection).
Some of the biggies with Lightning Lanes include:
2. 📷 PhotoPass AR Lenses and Downloads
At Disney World, guests can ask the Genie to queue up AR Lenses to enhance the in-park experience. This is especially cool for those of you who are all about taking photos at the parks.
At Disneyland, Unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads will be available to guests who purchase Disney Genie+.
3. 🎧 Audio Experiences
What is the castle audio? We need to know!
In addition to AR lenses that make characters pop into the scene, Disney Genie+ includes unique features to enhance your day out like audio experiences. We can’t wait to find out what the audio adds to our favorite classic attractions. Thanks, Genie!
What are Individual Attraction Selections?
OK, so what if you want to reserve a spot in line at more than one ride at a time?
For that, you’ve got Individual Attraction Selections. This option joins Disney Genie+ as a paid FastPass replacement for the retired FastPass and MaxPass.
This feature allows you to schedule an arrival time at up to two attractions that have Lightning Lanes but are not included with Disney Genie+.
Disney offers the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom Park and Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure Park as prime examples. You can get the full list of Individual Attraction Selection rides here.
As the individual part of the name should suggest, you’ll pay a separate cost per ride reservation. Prices vary per ride and will of course vary by date, attraction, and park. Disney has officially announce Individual Attraction Selection pricing as of Oct. 8.

How Do You Use Disney Genie, Disney Genie+, and Individual Attraction Selection?
Disney Genie, Disney Genie+, and Individual Attraction Selection are all conveniently baked into the My Disney Experience and the Disneyland apps. That means you’ll just need to download those—like you haven’t already, c’mon—and see how it works within the app.
Based on the previews, upgrading from Disney Genie to Disney Genie+ seems to be as simple as purchasing through the app, meaning you can change your mind on the fly. Same goes for any rides that qualify as an Individual Attraction Selection.
Wondering how it all works? We’ve comprehensive details on how the features work and can be purchased.

It includes a brief panel with folks from Plan Disney (starting around the 7-minute mark) that might address some of your deeper questions.
How Does Disney Genie Work for Annual Passholders?
If you’re an Annual Passholder, there’s good news and bad news. The good news: Disney Genie, Disney Genie+, and Individual Attraction Selections all work the same for you as they do for all other park guests.
The bad news? As of now, these new features all work the same for you as they do for all other park guests. At this time, Disney has not announced any discounts or additional perks for Annual Passholders.
But you can bet that Disney is working on ways to build special enhancements and perks into the program to make sure it benefits Annual Passholders. Perhaps we’ll know more about what that might include closer to Disney Genie’s launch this fall.
How Does Disney Genie Work for Resort Stays?
Like if you’re an Annual Passholder, Disney Genie works the same for you if you’ve booked a stay at a Disney Resort hotel.
🧞 However! You’ll have an added perk if you’re staying at a select hotel and decide to purchase Disney Genie+ and/or an Individual Attraction Selection.
Guests staying at any WDW Resort, as well as the Swan, Dolphin, and Shades of Green will have the first crack at selecting attractions.
You’ll be able to reserve your first spot through Disney Genie+ and Individual Attraction Selections at 7:00 AM.
Does Disney Genie Work for Park Hoppers?
Good news if you’re a Park Hopper: Disney Genie, Disney Genie+, and Individual Attraction Selections were made with you in mind.
You can make Lightning Lane selections at multiple parks, letting you hop to your heart’s content. Hop!
There’s bound to be a lot more info on the Disney Genie service in the weeks ahead. Best strap in and keep your eyes on WDW Magazine for all the big details.
