Hidden within their epitaphs is a murder mystery that Disney Imagineers designed for guests to solve while they wait in line. If you’ve never stopped to read the clues, you may have walked right past one of the attraction’s cleverest pieces of storytelling.

Where Can You Find the Dread Family?

If you’re hoping to solve the mystery yourself, you’ll need to pay close attention before you board the Haunted Mansion.

The Dread family can be found throughout the attraction’s interactive queue at Magic Kingdom. As you make your way toward the mansion, you’ll pass a series of marble busts featuring members of the mysterious family who once called the estate home. Each bust includes an epitaph filled with clues about that character’s fate, along with a hidden murder weapon that points to the next victim in the story.

Because the queue often keeps moving, it’s easy to walk right past these details without realizing they’re connected. If you really want to experience the mystery, visit when wait times are moderate or ask the Cast Member at the entrance whether you can take a moment to explore the queue. Can You Solve the Haunted Mansion Murder Mystery Without Spoilers?

Disney Imagineers designed the Dread family mystery to be solved using only the clues found throughout the queue. Each family member’s epitaph hints at how they died, while a hidden object on another family member’s bust reveals who committed the crime. By following the chain of clues from one victim to the next, you’ll slowly uncover exactly what happened inside the mansion.

Disney Guests Become the Detectives at the Haunted Mansion

The first step to solving the Dread family murder mystery is to inspect all the epitaphs on the family members’ busts. Each bust will give you a clue as to what murder weapon was used. Then, you must follow the murder weapons to solve the crime.

Uncle Jacob

Uncle Jacob was the first owner of the Mansion, and his epitaphs reads, “Greed was the poison he had swallowed. He went first, the others followed. His killer’s face he surely knew. Now, try to discover who killed who.” 

After reading this, we know Uncle Jacob was poisoned so the killer could inherit the Mansion. Now, as we mentioned before, on each epitaph there’s a murder weapon listed which will convict the killer – so that means in order to move on, you’ll need to look for poison.

Bertie

This should lead you to Bertie, who has a snake wrapped around his neck, indicating it may be poisonous. Bertie’s epitaph reads, “Avid hunter and expert shot, in the end that’s what he got.” Bertie was most likely a close relative to Uncle Jacob, as he is who would directly inherit the home… indicating Bertie is Uncle Jacob’s son.

However, after reading Bertie’s epitaph, it’s clear that he isn’t the owner of the mansion for long, since he was shot. Now, it’s time to look for a gun. 

Aunt Florence

Aunt Florence has a pistol on her grave, so that means she’s our next suspect. Florence was actually Jacob’s wife, meaning she killed her own son! Nonetheless, in order to keep moving forward, you must now read her epitaph, which states, “Never did a dishonorable deed, yet found face down in canary seed.”

Wellington and Forsythia

The twins, Wellington and Forsythia, are next on the list. If you look closely, you’ll a bag of birdseed between their heads – meaning they killed Aunt Florence and inherited the mansion.

Although they killed Aunt Florence, they weren’t owners for long, as their epitaph reads, “Departed life while in their beds, with identical bumps on their heads.”

The Last and Final Killer…Maude

This should lead you to our last and final killer, Maude.

Cousin Maude has the mallet on her epitaph, meaning she’s the one who killed the twins, leaving bumps on their heads. But it’s important to note Cousin Maude actually wasn’t a cousin to anyone in the family. She was a nanny to the twins, but because of how often she was at the Dread family’s mansion, it makes sense as to why the mansion would end up going to her after the twins died. 

However, with no one left to kill Maude, how did Maude die? First, you should read her epitaph: “Our sleeping beauty, who never awoke the night her dreams went up in smoke.”

This indicates Maude died in her sleep due to a fire. If you look behind Maude’s head on the bust, you’ll see three matches hold up her hair. Now, taking this information into the Haunted Mansion with you, you’ll want to pay close attention to the end of the attraction – because you’ll see a photo of Maude holding the matches with fire around her, indicating she may have accidentally killed herself after setting the mansion on fire for revenge to the Dread family, perhaps for not making her feel like family.

Is the Dread Family Part of the Haunted Mansion Story?

While the Dread family has become one of the Haunted Mansion’s most beloved hidden details, they aren’t actually part of the attraction’s original storyline.

Instead, the characters were created specifically for the interactive queue that was added to the Magic Kingdom version of the Haunted Mansion. Their story gives guests something entertaining to discover while they wait, turning the queue into an extension of the attraction rather than simply a line to stand in.

It’s also a great example of how Disney Imagineers layer storytelling into even the smallest details.
