Downtown Disney Opened at Disneyland Resort Today!

by | Jul 10, 2020 | Walt Disney World News, WDW Blog

Disneyland Resort’s Downtown Disney opened today as a part of their “phased reopening” process.

Even though Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure postponed their opening due to a rise in Covid-19 cases in the area, Downtown Disney moved forward and opened. Yesterday, July 9th, they held a Cast Member preview. Today, July 10th, Downtown Disney opened to all guests!

Here’s @rachels.disneylife at the Cast Member preview yesterday.

Safety Precautions

It’s no surprise that the safety precautions at Downtown Disney in California are nearly identical to those taken at Disney World in Florida.

Guests must pass through a security check, beginning with a temperature screening. One difference I noticed was the presence of canine security at Downtown Disney. Prior to walking through the metal detectors, guests will walk past the canine guards. If the dogs don’t alert, guests are free to continue forward.

Just like everywhere in Disney World, guests and cast members alike are required to wear masks.

This video from Yellow Productions on YouTube does a really great job of covering all the changes at Downtown Disney. In the first several minutes, he talks about safety precautions, and shows us what the security looks like.

He then takes you through the entirety of Downtown Disney, showing what shops are open, how World of Disney is operating, some cleaning procedures in action, and the general atmosphere.

What’s Open?

Much like Disney Springs’s opening, not every shop opened with Downtown Disney. However, World of Disney is open for the first day of Downtown Disney business.

Again, in similar fashion to Disney Springs, World of Disney had a long wait with a virtual queue for guests. Chris, from Yellow Productions, said he waited for about an hour and a half to get in.

From his video, it appeared that Downtown Disney was busy, but not incredibly crowed. With the exception of a few areas, it appears most people are respecting the 6 feet social distancing rule.

Many shops, including The Disney Dress Shop, Disney Home, and The Lego Store are open. Other big-name retailers, like Sephora and Pandora, are also open. Some shops have lines to get in, while others have implemented a specific entrance and exit.

A few shops and entertainment areas remain closed for the time being, like the movie theater and Splitsville.

Because of Orange County’s ban on indoor dining, guests can only enjoy patio seating at any open restaurants in Downtown Disney. Some locations have changed up their ordering, with many moving to or encouraging mobile ordering.

Despite the changes, there’s still so much to do and magic to enjoy! You can even go get yourself a baby Yoda, like @aarree!

And of course, since Downtown Disney opened, it calls for a stop at Earl of Sandwich!
