In this months issue of WDW Magazine we have a special section devoted to the Disney Cruise Line. We thought it would be fun to talk about Castaway Cay today so we invited Jackie to tell us about this special island.
One of the many benefits Disney Cruise Line guests experience, is the day-long stop at Disney’s Castaway Cay, an exclusive Bahamian island for guests only. Many activities are offered to people of all ages and abilities. Disney makes special accommodations for people requiring mobility assistance in the sand by offering special wheelchairs that easily traverse sandy terrain.
With nearly perfect weather year round, Disney’s Castaway Cay is likely to become a favorite port. A great convenience is that the ship is docked allowing guests easy access on and off the ship during the day.
Disney’s Castaway Cay has pristine beaches catering to families, called the Family Beach and adults only, called Serenity Bay. Children have their own designated and supervised play areas, well beyond and out of reach of the beach offering sand play areas, whale bone excavations, and splash pad areas found in Scuttle’s Cove and Spring-a-Leak.
Teens also have their private, exclusive, yet supervised area, also away from the beach, filled with fun activities called Hide Out.
Guests may access the various beaches or activity areas by foot on the nicely paved, scenic walkways or by open-air Tram near the ship. All beaches have complimentary use of two loungers, two chairs all under a large beach umbrella. Private beach Cabanas offering a private strip of beach are offered on both the Family Beach and adult exclusive Serenity Bay.
Pelican Plunge is the new floating water-play area near the Family Beach and great fun for people of all ages, allowing families to play together.
Guests are also able to rent private beach Cabanas which offer many amenities near Pelican Point, near the Family Beach and on Serenity Bay the adult exclusive beach. Cabanas are open-air rooms with refreshments available throughout the day. They have large covered porches, an open-air shower, hammock, include all floatation and snorkel equipment, a private strip of beach, loungers, beach chairs and an umbrella. A cast member is available to assist guests with snacks and refreshments upon request.
Spa treatments are readily available in open-air treatment style rooms with beautiful ocean views.
Food is abundant and guests enjoy a beach barbecue at Cookie’s BBQ near the Family Beach and Cookie’s Too near Serenity Bay. Disney also provides unlimited consumption of non-alcoholic beverages, soft serve ice-cream, and fresh fruit. Alcoholic beverages are available on the beach and at adult bars on Serenity Bay.
There is no shortage of activities at Disney’s Castaway Cay. Some of the most popular activities are: the Snorkeling Lagoon which offers underwater sights such as Mickey and Minnie statues, artifacts, marine life, a replica of the Nautilus submarine from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and other kinds of shipwrecks and artifacts.
The Castaway Ray Stingray Adventure allows guests to interact with small and medium-sized stingrays in a sectioned off area of the lagoon. Guests can rent sailboats, paddleboats and inflatable boats.
Parasailing is hugely popular as it allows spectacular views of the entire island and aerial views of the ship.
Single-speed bicycles can be rented to explore the island on paved pathways which lead to the observation tower offering stunning views of the island.
People who enjoy jogging or running may wish to begin their day with the complimentary Castaway Cay 5K while enjoying the lush scenery along the paved pathways.
All lagoons are shallow and sparkling clean. Near the Family Beach, guests will find a floating water splash platform called Pelican Plunge, with two different waterslides offering a different experience.
Finally, the Disney characters partake in many Castaway Cay photo opportunities and activities throughout the day, helping to further enhance special memories for guests.
Overall, the pampering given, the activities, quality and selection of beaches is unparalleled. This day at Disney’s Castaway Cay is truly magical and one that many guests treasure.

I am a former music teacher, now stay at home mother of two children, a daughter in third year at the University of Toronto and a special needs teenaged son afflicted with Autism. My husband and best friend of thirty-two years works hard and loves his job controlling airplanes at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. We have been visiting Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort annually for seventeen years and have sailed nine cruises with Disney Cruise Line on all four ships. We recently enjoyed our Mediterranean sailing on the beautiful Disney Magic and watched our son blossom seeing the ruins on all Port Adventures. Vacationing with Disney is a way of life for my family, with each vacation offering unique and memorable experiences.
