Disney has finally announced details for the Disneyland annual pass renewal. Guests waiting for a Magic Key renewal program have options — but with some major caveats. Here’s the news at a glance:

  • Only current Disneyland Magic Key Holders will be able to get a new Disneyland annual pass.
  • Costs have gone up for all four tiers of the Magic Key.
  • Disneyland is discontinuing the Dream Key and replacing it with the Inspire Key, which has blockout dates.

After discontinuing its annual pass program during the 13-month COVID-19 closure of Disneyland, Disney announced a new annual pass program in August of last year, called Magic Key. This program created four tiers for potential passholders to purchase, including the Imagine Key, Enchant Key, Believe Key, and Dream Key.

The Imagine Key was the entry-level tier while the Dream Key went for $1,399. The Dream Key, only for California residents, included no blockout dates, meaning Dream Key Holders could theoretically visit Disneyland every single day.

But Disneyland paused the Magic Key program back in May in an effort to control the massive crowds that have been attending both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure. As we approached the anniversary of the program, many current Magic Key Holders have been wondering what would happen when their passes expired.

How to Renew Your Disneyland Magic Key

While sales of a Disneyland annual pass are not returning, Disney is allowing current Magic Key Holders to renew their passes for another 12-month period starting Aug. 18.

But the Magic Key renewal program looks a little different from the original Magic Key program that Disneyland debuted in 2021. The two biggest changes:

  • Pricing
  • Blockout dates

Notably, the Disney Dream Key has been discontinued; instead, Disney has replaced it with the Inspire Key. Why the name change? Disney scrapped the no-blockout date perk from the Dream Key. Since some Magic Key Holders bought the Dream Key as recently as May of this year, meaning it’s good until May of next year. Disney needed a new name to differentiate between its old premium pass with no blockout dates and its new premium pass with blockout dates.

How Much Will a Disneyland Annual Pass Renewal Cost?

Pricing for all four tiers of the Disneyland Magic Key annual pass has increased. Here’s what a Disneyland annual pass renewal will cost you in 2022:

  • Disneyland Imagine Key renewal cost: $449. Previously, this pass cost $399.
  • Disneyland Enchant Key renewal cost: $699Previously, the pass cost $649.
  • Disneyland Believe Key renewal cost: $1,099. Previously, the pass cost $949.
  • Disneyland Inspire Key cost: $1,599. Previously, the Disneyland Dream Key cost $1,399.

The largest increase is from the old Dream Key to the replacement Inspire Key—an odd jump given that Disney reduced the perks of its premium pass.

What Are the Disneyland Magic Key Blockout Dates?

Blockout dates are all the days that you cannot get into Disneyland using your annual pass. The cheaper the pass, the more blockout dates you’ll have to contend with. This is Disney’s strategy for keeping crowds at bay, especially during the busiest times of the year (like weekends, summer, and Christmas).

The biggest upset this time around: Even the premium tier Disney Inspire Magic Key contains blockout dates around Christmastime.
