by | Jan 12, 2024 | Disney Cruise Line, Disney Treasure

Get a first look at some of the incredible scenes that’ll be part of the brand-new “Disney The Tale of Moana” show you can catch when the Disney Treasure sets sail.

There’s so much to be excited about for the upcoming Disney Treasure ship once it officially joins the Disney Cruise Line fleet in December 2024! From incredible theming in staterooms, restaurants, and lounges to unique entertainment offered solely onboard this new ship, the Treasure is going to be packed with must-see details and offerings. And one of the most exciting is the new Broadway-style stage show created just for the Disney Treasure: “Disney The Tale of Moana.”

“Disney The Tale of Moana” will debut exclusively at the Walt Disney Theatre on the Disney Treasure. It will tell a familiar story, one Disney fans absolutely love –– the story of the 2016 animated film Moana. But even if you know the movie well, you’ll be amazed at how it comes to life in this new stage show. Below, we’re sharing the first details about “Disney The Tale of Moana” we’ve learned.

“Disney The Tale of Moana” Will Be an Immersive, Transformational Adventure

When “Disney The Tale of Moana” officially premieres onboard the Disney Treasure, it’ll become the very first stage adaptation inspired by the Disney Animation Studios film. And it’s going to be impressive, with set design and music that capture elements of Pacific Islands culture, immersive storytelling, and some seriously awe-inspiring puppetry.

One of the centerpieces of this new Broadway-style show for Disney Cruise Line will be the puppetry that brings the characters of Moana to life on stage. Jeff Conover, Disney Live Entertainment creative director of puppetry and articulation, worked with master puppet designer Michael Curry (who also created the puppets used in the Tony Award-winning musical The Lion King on Broadway). The puppets will tower over the audience, turning characters into stunning lifelike figures.

Oh, and here’s a detail you don’t want to miss: Te Kā in particular will be amazing! The fiery figure will become a puppet of a scale that’s never before been produced for Disney Cruise Line. And it’s going to be purely magical when Moana meets Te Kā, restores the heart of Te Fiti, and discovers Te Fiti herself onstage.

Hear a Brand-New Song

One of the most beloved aspects of Moana is its catchy soundtrack. While the Grammy Award-winning tunes you already know and love from the movie –– including “You’re Welcome” and “We Know The Way” –– will be part of the “Disney The Tale of Moana” stage show on the Treasure, there will also be a grand new addition.

Moana and Maui will perform a new song as part of the show: “Warrior Face.” This song will take place when Maui teaches Moana how to face her fears before entering the Realm of the Monsters to face Tamatoa.

Discover the Cultures of the Pacific Islands

Another way in which “Disney The Tale of Moana” will immerse guests in the film’s setting and story come to life will be through set design filled with touches pulled from the cultures of the Pacific Islands. Throughout the show, audiences will learn about these cultures and become immersed in them, from the words of Gramma Tala (the show’s narrator) to vibrant culturally-inspired dances to songs in a mix of languages like Tuvaluan, Tokelauan, and Samoan.

Of course, plenty of other touches will come together in “Disney The Tale of Moana” to turn the film into a Broadway-worthy show! From familiar scenes such as the manta ray (and spirit of Gramma Tala) to the ocean choosing Moana, each of these standout moments from Moana’s story will come to life in bigger, more awe-inspiring ways once the Treasure sets sail.
