Disney has revealed new details about the first-ever “Coco” attraction coming to Disney California Adventure, including its storyline, queue, characters, and more.

Since its release in 2017, Disney and Pixar’s Coco has become a fan favorite, with Miguel, Dante, and other characters from the film regularly appearing at Disneyland Resort. The movie has also played a starring role in seasonal celebrations like Plaza de la Familia.

Soon, guests will have an entirely new way to step into Miguel’s world. Disney is currently building the first-ever Coco attraction at a Disney park, and we now know much more about what the experience will entail.

During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney revealed new details about the attraction’s storyline, location, characters, ride experience, and connection to the upcoming Coco 2.

Coco Ride at Disneyland Resort: An Overview

First announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in 2024, the new Coco attraction is coming to Disney California Adventure Park.

The family-friendly boat ride will take guests on a journey through Miguel’s memories of the Land of the Dead, featuring characters including Miguel, Dante, Héctor, and more.

Walt Disney Imagineering is drawing inspiration from classic Disneyland attractions including Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion, while using the latest Audio-Animatronics technology to bring the attraction’s skeletal characters to life.

The ride will celebrate the characters and music of Coco, along with Mexican culture and the film’s themes of family and remembering those who came before us.

And Disney has confirmed one particularly important detail for families: The Coco attraction will have no height requirement.

What Is the Story of the Coco Ride?

We finally know how the new attraction will fit into the story of Coco. The ride will take place one year after the events of the original film.

The experience will begin before guests even board their boat. The attraction’s queue will welcome visitors into a “casa museo” dedicated to the music of Héctor Rivera, Miguel’s great-great-grandfather.

From there, guests will join Miguel and travel by boat through his memories of the Land of the Dead. Disney describes the experience as one filled with music, emotion, fun, and surprises, allowing riders to experience Miguel’s journey alongside their own friends and family.

The new storyline also means the attraction won’t simply recreate the events of the 2017 movie. Instead, it will expand Miguel’s story while revisiting the characters, locations, and memories that made the original film so memorable.

The Coco Ride Will Connect to Coco 2

The attraction isn’t being developed with only the original movie in mind.

Disney and Pixar are currently working on Coco 2, and Imagineers are working closely with Pixar to incorporate nods to both the original Coco and its upcoming sequel into the attraction.

Disney hasn’t revealed exactly how Coco 2 will factor into the experience, so we’ll have to wait to learn what characters, details, or Easter eggs from the sequel might eventually appear.

What Will the Coco Ride Be Like?

The new Coco attraction will be a boat ride, with Imagineers looking to some of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions for inspiration.

Disney has specifically cited Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion as influences on the development of the attraction. Imagineers are also using the latest Audio-Animatronics technology to bring the skeletal inhabitants of the Land of the Dead to life.

Concept art released for the attraction has shown colorful scenes filled with skeletons, music, and familiar Coco imagery. Combined with the boat ride format, the attraction is shaping up to be a large-scale, family-friendly experience rather than a thrill ride.

And with no height requirement, everyone from young children to adults will be able to experience it.

Where Will the Coco Ride Be Located?

The new Coco ride is being built in the area near Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure.

Disney has now revealed an even more specific detail about how guests will access it: The attraction’s queue will begin in Pixar Pier next to Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind.

The attraction itself is being constructed largely in an area that was previously used for backstage operations, allowing Disney California Adventure to expand its guest-facing footprint.

Construction Is Underway on the Coco Ride

Unlike when the attraction was first announced, construction is no longer something we’re waiting for. Work is officially underway on the new Coco attraction.

Disney initially announced that groundbreaking would take place in fall 2025. Construction is now in progress in the area near Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier as Imagineers begin bringing the attraction to life.

When Will the Coco Ride Open at Disneyland Resort?

Disney has not yet announced an opening date or opening year for the new Coco attraction at Disney California Adventure.

With construction now underway, the project has moved well beyond the initial concept stage, but we’ll have to wait for Disney to provide a more specific opening timeline.
