Ever wonder what Disney’s Castaway Cay 5K is all about? Here’s what you need to know to get you ready for your next Disney Cruise to the Caribbean.

It’s a new year, which means we are all about getting into shape. There’s no better way than to run or walk along the sandy shores of Castaway Cay. If you’re heading on a Disney Cruise originating from a Florida port, you will most likely have a chance to visit the crystal blue waters of Disney’s Castaway Cay

For fitness fiends, this island paradise offers more than just clear water and strong drinks. The Castaway Cay 5K is a free race that you can tackle while visiting Castaway Cay—and it’s a good way to burn off some of those calories from all that cruise dining.

We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions about the Castaway Cay 5K. If you still have more questions, connect with us on the DCL Magazine Facebook.

Guests most frequently ask about the price for the Castaway Cay 5K. But that’s what we love most: The Castaway Cay 5K is free for guests to sign up.

Depending on your voyage, premium packages might be available for upgrade. In the past, these have included complimentary sign-up plus a swag bag with 5K merchandise that could be delivered to your stateroom.

How Do You Register for the Castaway Cay 5K?

As you could imagine, this is a popular event, so registration is required. There are two ways that guests can sign up for the race.

If you are certain you will be participating ahead of time, you can sign up prior to boarding on the Disney Cruise Line website or within the Navigator app, once the booking window opens.

Just like you organize any other event for your sailing, you’d head to your plans for your Castaway Cay day and add on the 5K.

If there is some uncertainty regarding participation, you can always wait until you are onboard and head to Guests Services on your first day to register

Does Weather Impact the Race?

Castaway Cay is an island located in the Bahamas. Therefore, weather is something that is always top of mind. From the wind to the possibility of rain, you might wonder if the 5K is impacted by weather.

The answer is yes, the Castaway Cay 5K is considered a weather-permitting event. If the crew aboard your Disney Cruise deems the weather to be unsafe for its participants, there is a chance that the event can be canceled.

Do I Have to be a Runner to Participate in the 5K?

The best part about the Castaway Cay 5K is that you do not have to be a runner to participate. Since the 5K is a family-friendly event, runners and walkers alike are welcome to take part.

If you are someone who wants to run, go for it; plenty of people will be running the race. But if you aren’t a runner, don’t be intimidated—walking is encouraged as well!

How Long Is the Castaway Cay 5K? Is it Timed?

The name by itself sounds scary: You have to run or walk a 5K! But a 5K is really just 3.1 miles.

You’ll find an official clock at the start/end points, but it’s not there to create a competitive atmosphere. Despite the clock, this race is meant to be relaxed and fun, and your completion is not dependent on your running/walking time

Can Kids Participate in the Castaway Cay 5K?

Another great part of the Castaway Cay 5K is that children 10 years and older can participate too. If you have little ones under the age of 10 who can’t participate, Disney’s Castaway Cay is home to their own children’s club, Scuttle’s Cove.

The Cast Members are the same ones who work at the Oceaneers Club on the ship; this is a fun area for kids to check out.

How Do I Find the Starting Location?

With a ship filled with thousands of people, how do you find the starting point for the Castaway Cay 5K? Prior to the race, you will be given a designated onboard meeting location.

As a group, you will head off the ship and toward the start. Of course, it’s Disney, so be sure to take a character picture before your race. The best part—when you participate in this race, you will be one of the first people to disembark the ship

What Is the Castaway Cay 5K Route?

The route is pretty simple. You are able to see and explore areas you might not have seen if you didn’t participate in the 5K. The race starts at the landing strip and takes you to the bike path, the adults beach, and back around the bike path again. And then you’re done!

As you’re running and walking, you’ll encounter water stations available to catch your breath and cool off. Be sure to take some selfies along the way to remember the fun experience.

Will I Receive a Medal When I’m Finished?

The best part of any race is the medal at the end. As previously mentioned, you are not officially timed during this race, so all participants receive a Castaway Cay 5K medal, no matter how long it takes you to finish.

The medal is a great way to show off your pride in completing the race. Plus, it makes for an amazing souvenir from your vacation.
