Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Has Reopened: Learn About the Updates

by | Apr 8, 2026 | Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World, Walt Disney World News

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin attraction has reopened after a lengthy refurbishment. Find out more about what changed.

While fans of the Toy Story franchise can enter the world of the movies at Disney’s Hollywood Studios courtesy of Toy Story Land, that isn’t the only Disney World park where you can find the characters. Magic Kingdom is home to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, which has been available to Guests of Tomorrowland since 1998. The interactive shooting dark ride game is based on the 1990s cartoon series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, allowing Guests to step into the role of Star Command recruits on a mission to defeat Zurg.

While the ride has undergone some light refreshments and upgrades since opening over 25 years ago, the attraction has generally stayed the same without any major technological advancements. That is, of course, until now.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Refurbishment

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has reopened after a long refurbishment. The ride’s last day of operation was August 3, 2025, and it reopened on April 8, 2026.

Ride Vehicle and Blaster Updates

Major updates were made to the ride vehicles, with a new design inspired by the colors of Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. Each enhanced vehicle also comes equipped with video monitors to provide real-time scoring updates.

Handheld blasters are another updated feature, for better aim, and allowing younger riders to participate more in the experience. These blasters also come in two different colors per star cruiser, with new lighting, sound, and vibration effects so players know where they’re aiming.

A New Scene

A new scene has also been added with a brand new character. Friendly robot “Buddy” was created by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios to play a key role on the Star Command team.

He is on hand to make sure departing Space Rangers are prepared for their mission, giving Guests encouragement and final system checks before they launch off.

Interactive Targets

The previous static Z targets were also given an update with new technology that allows them to react and light up when hit.
