Disneyland Resort is getting an Avatar experience of its very own. Here’s everything we know about the theme park addition right now.
Disneyland Resort is always changing, and one of the biggest upcoming changes is one that’s set to be absolutely massive in scope, technology, and immersion: a brand-new Avatar land, inspired by the film series of the same name by James Cameron.
Inspired by the success of Disney World’s own Avatar land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the continued popularity of the ongoing film franchise, Disney announced that Disneyland Resort will be getting an “Avatar experience” of its very own. What will it look like? Well, we’re pretty certain it’ll be an Avatar land – and we’re sharing all of the details we know so far below.

In 2024, news of an upcoming Avatar experience at Disneyland Resort broke. During a Walt Disney Company earnings call with investors, CEO Bob Iger revealed that the company would be bringing “ an exciting Avatar experience” to Disneyland Resort.
However, the details – at least at that time – were very scarce. It was unclear if the Avatar experience at Disneyland would be a land, a form of entertainment, or some other kind of activation in the theme parks.
Later in 2024, during the D23 Expo, more details about this upcoming addition were revealed. Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro shared that the Avatar experience at Disneyland Resort would be a new destination at Disney California Adventure Park.
This new space will draw inspiration from Avatar: The Way of Water and other upcoming Avatar films like Avatar: Fire and Ash. While it’s unclear right now just what this planned experience will include, the presentation included key hints like a “thrilling excursion… taking guests all the way to the wide-open seas of Pandora” and “grand scale”, suggesting Disneyland is getting much more than a single attraction or small-scale experience.
It’s worth noting, though, that Disney has been a bit hesitant to use the word “land” to describe the upcoming Avatar experience at California Adventure. So, while it may ultimately become a land or an expansion of California Adventure’s existing space, there’s no guarantee – though concept art does show varying attractions in what is assumed to be a dedicated Avatar land of some kind.
Avatar at Disneyland: Where Will the Land Be Located?
Disneyland’s Avatar experience will be located at California Adventure. A portion of the existing Hollywood Backlot area will be transformed in order to make room for this upcoming experience.
While the project is still in the early stages of development and it’s unclear just how much space the Avatar experience will take up, we do know that it will force the closure of one current attraction: Monsters, Inc. Mikey & Sulley to the Rescue! This attraction is slated to close in early 2026 as work begins on the Avatar plans.
When Will Disneyland’s Avatar Land Open?
We don’t have an anticipated opening date – or even opening year – just yet for the Avatar experience at Disneyland Resort.
While Josh D’Amaro noted that “Plans are drawn. Dirt is moving,” during the announcements at the 2024 D23 Expo, there is currently no timeframe for Avatar at Disneyland. We do not know when ground on the experience will be broken, what might be coming to the land, or how long it’ll be under construction.
It is likely, based on other announcements and expansions happening at the resort, that this new experience (or land) will come after the Avengers Campus expansion and the upcoming Coco-inspired attraction, both of which are also happening at California Adventure.

As of right now, we don’t have much in the way of details on attractions, dining, entertainment, or other Avatar experiences that may come to Disneyland Resort and, more specifically, California Adventure.
Concept art for the Avatar land suggest there may be three attractions, but we don’t know what those may look like (much of the art shows guests riding in a boat, which leads us to think there’s likely to be a dark ride similar to Pirates of the Caribbean).
Once we do know more about what’s coming to the Avatar-inspired land at Disneyland Resort, we’ll keep you updated!
