During the Morgan Stanley teleconference, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger confirmed that a land inspired by Avatar will be coming in the future to Disneyland Resort.

In February 2023, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger made headlines when he teased that “an exciting Avatar experience” was in the future for Disneyland Resort (as reported by the OC Register). Since then, further confirmation or news on the planned experience has been light — until now.

Avatar-Based Land Coming to Disneyland

Bob Iger participated in a question-and-answer session at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference today, where he brought up some exciting news and developments. Among his reveals, he shared an update on the highly-anticipated Avatar expansion for Disneyland Resort. In answering a question, he shared, “We have one Avatar-based land, Pandora, in Florida. We’re going to put a second one in California.” This seemingly confirms that the Avatar project on the West Coast will involve a full land, which is what’s currently available at Disney World as part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. During the Walt Disney Company 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, CEO Bob Iger shared further details and concept art for the proposed land.

“We’re thrilled about many potential new stories that our guests could experience at Walt’s original theme park, including the opportunity to embark on all-new Avatar adventures with a visit to the world of Pandora,” Iger said. “Our Imagineers have been hard at work dreaming up what guests might expect.”

Pandora – The World of Avatar

Currently, Pandora – The World of Avatar is exclusive to Animal Kingdom, housing two rides as well as dining and entertainment options. The fully immersive land takes guests into the world of the Avatar franchise, where they can journey through the Kasvapan River of Pandora on Na’vi River Journey, or fly on the back of a mountain banshee as part of Flight of Passage.

The Land is based on the Avatar franchise, which first debuted in 2009, followed by a sequel in 2022. The lands will have plenty of material to work from, as a third, fourth, and fifth movie are planned for 2025, 2029, and 2031, respectively.

Future Expansions at the Disney Parks

Along with the Avatar news, Iger also answered questions on potential expansions at the parks. He shared that there are still acres of land to develop around the park, stating that “We could actually build seven new, full lands if we wanted to, around the world.” He even noted that they have the ability to increase the size of Disneyland Resort by 50%.

While Disney has kept quiet on future expansions, they have teased options. At the D23 Expo in 2023, concept art was shown for a potential Animal Kingdom reimaging that would include lands based on Encanto and Indiana Jones. The concept was floated as a possible replacement for the current Dinoland, U.S.A. within the park. While they were quick to note that plans are not finalized yet, it makes for an intriguing possibility to look forward to at the parks!
