The magical moments delivered each day by Disney World Cast Members are captured in our special Cast Member Magic issue of WDW Magazine. Learn what it takes to be a Jungle Cruise Skipper, get the forgotten history of the Great Movie Ride, and take an inside look at the Cast Member newspaper that’s been a part of the Disney World Cast Member experience for 50 years.
Cinderella Castle is a Disney World icon, Mickey Bars are an out-of-this-world snack experience, and the thrills of soaring around the world at EPCOT or falling backward down Everest at Animal Kingdom are memories you’ll keep forever. But none of this magic would exist without the dedicated Disney World Cast Members.
Saluting Disney World Cast Members This (and Every) Month
Our February 2022 issue of WDW Magazine is an homage to these magic makers—our small way of saying thank you for all their effort and care. If you aren’t a print subscriber, you can still get your hands on our February issue by signing up for our monthly digital subscription. So what kinds of content will you unlock when you launch a digital subscription to WDW Magazine? These are some of my favorite stories from our Cast Member Magic issue:
🐘 1. What It Takes to be a Jungle Cruise Skipper
You won’t have to hit the backside of our magazine to unlock the mystery of the backside of water. One of our feature articles takes you into the heart of the jungle with retired Jungle Cruise Skipper Right Guard Ian, who shares some behind-the-scenes details about how to become a Jungle Cruise Skipper, what the training program is like, and that time he almost died at Schweitzer Falls (don’t worry, his dad caught it on camera).
Most intriguing, Right Guard Ian shares how Jungle Cruise Skippers earn their nicknames. Find out this and more by unlocking our digital edition …
🗞️ 2. Eyes & Ears, the Cast Member Newspaper
Did you know that Disney World has its own internal communication system for Cast Members called Eyes & Ears? This newspaper has evolved greatly over the last half a century, but the heart of the publication has remained true: It’s a way to communicate necessary details to all the Disney World Cast Members, whether they’re running the front desk of the Poly, teaching archery at Fort Wilderness, or setting off fireworks over Cinderella Castle.
For our February issue, Editorial Director Rain Blanken spoke with a former Eyes & Ears Editor to hear more about this iconic paper—and we even got our hands on some historic copies so you can see how these have evolved over the years!
⛰️ 3. Imagineering Details in Anandapur
Anandapur is a fictional land in Animal Kingdom, but when you’re booking it to Expedition Everest, it’s easy to miss out on all the intricate Imagineering details. WDW Magazine co-owners Steph and Danny Shuster spoke with a Cast Member, who walked them through some of these subtle details that Imagineers built into the land, like where the ice cream truck actually came from and the changing set dressing above the restrooms.
Want all the secrets of Anandapur? Start your monthly digital subscription to get our February issue …
🎬 4. Remembering the Great Movie Ride
The Great Movie Ride—gone but not forgotten. In our special Cast Member Magic issue, columnist Catherine Hiles spoke with a former Disney World Cast Member who worked on the Great Movie Ride. She shared some of the little-known details about the ride and also talked about how she and others had to learn the scripts for the tour guides, gangsters, and bank robbers.
From start to finish, this epic journey into cinema was only possible because of the creativity and humor of Disney World Cast Members. Take a trip back in time with us in our February 2022 issue …
🍽️ 5. A Review of Whispering Canyon
You can find a lot of upscale dining at Disney, with meals thought up by globally renowned chefs. And then there’s Whispering Canyon Cafe, where Cast Members work tirelessly to play pranks on you throughout your meal. The food here is delicious (and we’ve got the pics to prove it), but it’s the Cast Member interactions that make this Wilderness Lodge restaurant a must-visit.
We sent our dynamic duo of Tina (WDW Magazine Reporter) and Jeff (WDW Magazine Photographer) to find out what happens when you ask for a refill, directions to the restroom, or just a simple bottle of ketchup.
🎈 6. Parades at Tokyo Disneyland
Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea hands down have the best, brightest, most colorful parades of any Disney Park. But did you know that Japan has a lot of unspoken etiquette about how to view parades? TDRExplorer founder Chris Nilge shares stunning photos of these special parades and all the tips you’ll need for a successful parade experience when you visit TDR.
